Masking around windshield and side window rubber gaskets

I am in the process of repainting my 356 Porsche. The windows will remain in the car and I was wondering if there is some trick to getting masking tape under the rubber gasket and then folding it outward so that I don't get paint on the edge of the rubber seal.

Thanks

You can do it with tape but tricky, they make a lifting plastic in different sizes that will lift the rubber of the paint, looks like weed whacker plastic.
All jobbers stock it.

3m makes a tape with a hard plastic-like edge, you can pull back the rubber molding and it has a peel-off portion what will stick and hold back the rubber. I think it may be the same thing that Barry has mentioned.

This is the 3M tape.

"The 10 mm firm strip of this tape is slid under the molding. The liner on the remaining adhesive side is then removed and the tape is folded over and adhered to the glass, actually lifting up the molding and allowing paint to flow under it. This tape saves time, labor, and the cost of removing and installing new moldings, plus the removal of paint lines on existing moldings."

If your jobber doesn't carry it or doesn't know what you're talking about, here's a site you can order it from:

Thanks SOF,
I didn't click on the "Buy Online" button. Now that I have, "I think it's the big one Elizabeth!"

Thanks guys for the response. I will pick up a box of that tape. I was trying to slip masking tape and paper under the gasket but it wasn't working.

THANKS for the solution to the problem

Actually the stuff I was talking about looks like weed whacker line but comes in different diameters and you lay it under the rubber and it lifts the remember off the metal, can't remember what it is called.

clothesline rope works much the same. couldn't find mine now i have a clean up on the 37. :( bet i pick up a roll this week. slip under the rubber to keep the edge up . then you can tape to the edge of the rubber.

The price was enough to make me think it was Halloween again, LOL.

The 3m is worth the price for sure. I ran out of it, went to a local jobber that sold the Hystick brand for 1/2 the cost, that stuff sucked! Barely held anything and getting it off was worse!

RodMan,
Thank you for that information. I Googled "lifting tape" and the first couple had to do with fingerprinting. The third, from Amazon gave me a picture of a naked woman taping up her boobs. Lost concentration after that....

I use electrical wire, different gages for different applications. Plus the copper retains a bend for a corner pretty nicely.

I usually use rope, but sometimes popsicle sticks can be slid in the window opening (groove)
and hold the rubber up real far, toung depressers work too,
both can be had at a craft store, they're cheap and I also use them for stirs.

One thing to remember when propping these plastic mouldings is if you bake the car with the mouldings up and allow it to cool the mouldings will sometimes take a set. After it cools remove whatever is used to prop the mouldings up then bake the car again and the mouldings will relax to their original shape. You can also use a heat lamp and move it around the car.
