Looking for a Basecoat to use with SPI products

Howdy,
Wow, things have really changed since I went to school. I’ve got a couple of cars that I’m wanting to get started on. The first being a 78 Camino. I was taught on PPG back in the 90’s and painted a few cars plus helped a couple of my students learn so I’m familiar with their line and really liked it back then. I called a place here in North Carolina yesterday and my quote for a kit of DBI and Reducer was 1,833.50. I remember when DBC was around 200-300 depending upon the color. I’ve been looking at some of the forums on other sites and SPI keeps coming up. I know that DP line of primes is no longer the same and with every one raving about SPI’s epoxy primer I thought I’d look into it. After getting my quote yesterday, I’m wondering if there is a good brand of basecoat that will work with the SPI line of primers and clears. The ones I’ve found so far are ****$*****, The Paint Depot, R&E Paint Supply, and UreChem. I did notice the tropical Glitz last night and might order a couple of samples from them. I’m trying to find a GM med to dark blue for the Camino that doesn’t have a purple tint to it.

Thanks for any suggestions
Bill

I haven't found any base coat that can't be sprayed over SPI Primers, or under SPI Clears. For the most part, you get what you pay for on the colors. Moto-base is a less expensive line that is highly regarded on the forum, but I have never sprayed it myself. Stay away from the cheap lines, as they are usually more expensive in the end.

I made a slight mistake, I used DBU years ago. The quote was on the DBC.

Thanks for the response. I ordered some samples from Tropical Glitz this evening. I'm looking at the Motobase and maybe one or two others.

urechem might make their paint, not sure but the others dont make anything. they are just having paint private labeled for them from crap economy paint companies. stick with the motobase or wanda. wanda being akzo nobel which is one of the largest paint companies in the world. both are much less expensive and a premium product. wanda is cheaper than sikkens because it comes with no tech support or factory warranty that a big production shop may need.
