lacquer or enamel

A customer of mine had a friend that painted at a gm plant back in the late 60's and 70's. He gave him a picture way back then of them painting cars and was describing the process. The picture showed two guys going to town on 1 car...in white pants and a white t-shirt, no respirator! Notice above when i said my customer HAD a friend that painted at the gm plant. I dont think there are any still living that painted these cars back then...wonder why. Weren't gm cars still acrylic lacquer at that time? I think mopars and fords had switched to enamel by then?

HBO aired a documentary in July titled Mann vs. Ford. It was about Ford's Mahwah, NJ plant's paint sludge disposal practices. One scene showed workers in coveralls spraying the final finish. No masks but obviously very effective downdraft room. Credibility suffered in the next scene when completed Dodge Chargers (might have been Coronets but definitely Dodges) are being driven out of the plant. The EPA might be a monster but a daily dose of 6,000 gallons of paint sludge dumped in mineshafts behind their kid's school might deserve a little regulation. The oldest residents in the mostly native American village are in their early 60s and their cancers are slow growing. Ford won the case -- anybody could have dumped those pools of Candy Apple Red.
