iwata purple can problems

I have used my iwata lph 400 with the purple cap 4 times and today it wont spray right. It sprays wide but it acts like it doesn't want to let much paint come through. I put the orange cap on and it did fine. I recleaned it even though it was clean, any ideas?? I was spraying a burgundy metallic so I wanted to use the purple cap. it works fine with the silver and the orange cap.

Dumb questions, but did you hold it up to the light and look at all of the holes? Was it sealing correctly? When you cleaned the cap did you take it apart? Did you install the seal in the correct direction?

you know that purple cap always sprays dry unless you narrow the fan but the whole point of it is to spray kinda dry and wide. you are taking the same amount of paint and spreading it over twice the area so it seems like its not putting out the same amout as the other caps. that cap just dusts the paint on. its a dropcoat cap.

I have a tip cleaner or wire that is a size smaller than the holes made for that I used to make shure it was clean. It just didn't want to spray wet like it had been before. I was under the impression the purple cap was for metallic and the orange for solid. I did activate the base which I normally don't do because it was a front bumper but it sprayed wet with the orange cap. Might just be me but it just didn't seem to spay right. does activated base spray that much different? The iwata is the best clear gun I've ever used but for base I've got some figuring out to do. I'm use to a gti millennium but I'm a smaller person and the iwata fits me a lot better.

I use the silver cap for everything. I purchased one of those purple caps when they came out... To me it was an absolute waste of money

There's a body shop in town that uses just the purple cap, now I see why his jobs are spotchy and don't match. I ended up using the orange cap for base and it worked fine, just having to make changes in the middle of painting is a pain. Just when you think you know it all you learn something new.

That air cap is to be used at 6-10 psi with a 75-85% overlap. How were you guys using it?

With the orange and purple cap i spray with 20-22psi, with the silver cap for clear I spray with 28-30psi at the gauge. I have no idea what the air cap psi really is, but 16psi doesn't work for me. The purple cap normally sprays the same to me as far as wetness just wider than the orange like the silver. I spray my base wet, If I spray it dry or like a drop coat it looks like the other guys around here that don't match and blotchy. I sprayed the same color last week and it did fine so somethings up with the cap or maybe the moons out of line with the stars, i'll figure it out this week.

that info came from Hub Jorgenson (?). He is supposed to be the guru of paint guns. I'd say try it at those pressures. He said do not exceed 14psi or you will have trouble.

I shoot with the purple cap at 20psi for the metallics(zero problems). For clear with the silver cap I play around between 30-35 depending on what clear I am shooting. Again. No issues. Ive played around quite a bit with all the caps and this is what's comfortable for me.

I use the silver and orange for single stages, basically what's ever on the gun at the time.

I had to give up the purple cap because it is too sensitive to being out of perpendicular to the surface, in particular I was having trouble with the center rear of truck hoods.

I used to just use it for silvers, but just got used to it for any mettalic. I have never tried the silver for any mettalic base, but many have said it works nice.

I did try my tekna copper once for a silver base and I just couldnt get it to lay out nice. Had to quickly go back to the iwata.

Who's Hub Jorgenson? That info came from me, trial and error not everyone sprays the same I know a painter that sprays with same gun at 25psi. Just trying to figure out why its not spraying right with the purple cap when it was a few days ago? I know someone with a purple cap I'm gonna try theirs to see if its the same. I always have trouble LOL. Those pressures work fine for me, 14psi won't cut it with me I've tried that from 5psi to 35psi.

The orange worked fine so far for base and the silver for clear, but I swear the purple sprayed different the other times I used it. The longer I stay sober the more I think too much LOL, A cold beer could fix most anything!

I love my Iwatas, but now I use a Tekna of all things for basecoat, while keeping my LPH400 for clear, and I am happy now.

What are setting on the tekna for base? 7e7 cap?

Curt - beer will fix 110% of your problems. Lol

aae 6-10lbs has to be cap pressure. no one is shooting an iwata of any kind at 6 lbs at the gun.
