isocynates

All SPI 2K urethane activators contain isocyanate, which means most primers (except epoxy) all but one clear (intercoat clear is 1K), and I believe bedliner activator also has isocyanate. Basecoat when mixed per SPI's recommendation will also contain a small amount of isocyanate.

Proper body and respiratory protection is required for all use of SPI products regardless of their isocyanate content, all auto paint products can cause health problems or death if absorbed in sufficient quantities.

treat anything in a paint can like something that will kill hell out of you. because it will . many painters died long before urethanes came along. just because chip foose shoots without a mask does not make it cool.

what gets me is people wear a mask with no eye protection. your eyes are like open nerves, a gateway to your brain. cover-up!

If you notice, Chip is in the "dead zone" of air flow in that downdraft booth according to studies there are eddies on the sides that contain concentrated amounts of iso's. Playing with his own health to be cool on tv, and setting a dam poor example of how to do it for all the people that see it.

i always liked chip. still a nice person but i lost a lot of respect for him over that. i dont care if they are shooting water or solvent. it's still stupid.

evryone on tv think that chip foose is the only great car builder. i cant stand watching those overhaulin shows anymore. and watching him host that history of the hotrod show while you can clearly see him reading off the cue cards is just plain embarrassing

skip grew up in a streetrod shop and he is one of the premier designers in the country . but that painting without protection just wrinkles my bacon.

What filter cartridge do you guys use for Isocynates? I think the one I have is a 3M #6006 is it sufficient or do I need to get something else? Is any charcoal filter OK to use? This particular cartridge # 6006 goes on a 3M mask 6000 series.

I belive osha requires fresh air resporators for iso.

I would also like to know the ppe everyone is using. Espespecially completely closed active chorcaol type.

All the materials used in autobody repair are bad for your health. I think the exposure level determines what the recommended minimum protection should be. I've been using 3M disposable respirators for years, I got tired of using the SAS fresh air system I had. A fresh air system, full body suit with no skin or eye exposure is the best but it's ultimately your choice. The amount of airflow through your spray area is the determining factor IMO.

the booth is definitely a key factor. i always shoot with a 3m 1/2 face respirator with the changeable charcoal cartridges and prefilters. if i take the mask off with the booth running though and i am upwind (crossflow booth) i can barely even smell anything. if i didnt have a good place to spray and there was a good amt of overspray buildup i would go back to my full face mask.

something to remember , you cant smell iso's . imho the only safe way to work anymore is a full hood .

Im a big believer in full face mask with fresh air supply. Problem with the masks that filter the air is lack of eye protection and not replacing the filters before the expiration date once they are opened and exposed to hazardous materials. I assume there are a lot of hobbyists that do not replace these filters as often as they should.

How often do you have to change the filters on them Shine? I hear the filters have an expiration date on the once you open them, regardless of how much you use them. If you do use the a lot, do they plug up pretty fast? Are the filters expensive to replace?

there are no filters. it is a fresh air hood. there are charcoal filters for them but i do not use them. i do not paint every day so using compressed air is not an issue. my booth is 150 ft from the compressor and there are good filters in line. the last one at the booth. if painting everyday i would have the bullard filter system installed. the hoods are replaceable .
