I'm Doing Something Wrong...

M

MTME-50

This has happened twice now. The first ime, I was using a small 20 gallon compressor at my grandpa's golf course and I figured it must have been moisture in the air hose or something like that. Last thursday, I sprayed some control arms and they were almost perfect, except for a few small runs on two of the edges (I should have left them alone, but I'm a perfectioist and just knowing that a run was somewhere on my pickup would bug me.). So I wet sanded the runs with some 80 grit sandpaper (used a bit of dish soap in the water), sanded all the other pieces, cleaned the control arms and other pieces with dish soap and then with Simple Green. I let them dry over night, then took them to my boss's shop to spray today. Cleaned all the pieces with 700 cleaner. This happened on most of the pieces. I use an old (older than me) Binks Model 7 for primer, and I'm sure I cleaned the gun properly before I sprayed. Pressure was around 25 psi at the regulator on the gun (60 at the regulator on the compressor).

Is my pressure too high? I used 23 psi at the gun last time and the primer flowed out beautifully.
Too heavy?
It seems to happen mostly on the front leaf spring shackle; no idea why.

Any advice?

Too heavy, easy as that. Let it cure and sand it out if you want. Don't worry, I went through the same thing when I first sprayed Barry's epoxy.

Ive learned that on my sata 4000 rp i keep the psi at around 28-30 and the fluid turned only 1-1/2 turns out and move quickly. i have no problems spraying and getting blotches or pits.

Thanks, Nor'Easter and Steve. Good thing I bought a lot of sandpaper when it was on sale. This may be a long learning experience.

Just out of curiosity, is there a recommended pressure setting for siphon-feed guns like mine? I know not many people use them anymore, but I really love mine. If not, I guess I'll just play anound a bit and find a pressure I like.

Also, how much does heat affect the pot life of the epoxy? I stored what I had let in the cup in a sealed can. It wasn't bad today, but it has been 95-105 degrees the past few weeks.

It's been so long since I used an old siphon gun. I had a JGA... I think that one needs around 50PSI. Shine will know. From the look, you need more pressure and maybe less fluid, or move faster.
