I see scratches in my clear coat

Hi all,

Here was my process:

Color is A52 Space Grey Metallic (on BMW's).
SPI Universal clear, 3 coats.
Clear dried about a week.
Car will be a driver, but would like to show it off at show&shine events.

1. 800 wet by hand using flexible sanding block.
2. 3M 1500 trizact wet, then 3000 trizact wet on 3/16 DA.
3. Buffed using 3M Perfect-it #1 and #2 with matching foam pads.

Did I do something wrong?

Since the scratches are straight (no pigtails), I am guessing it is the 800 wet step. Should I go back with the 1500 the 3000 step?
Maybe switch to a wool pad for Perfect-it #1 step?

thanks

You could try sanding the opposite direction of the 800 scratches with your next step so it is easier to tell when you get them all. I have never been able to skip too many steps with good results. I usually use 800 1000 1500 2000 3000 trizact.

just a greenhorn here, but after fighting it, i had ot concede that what these guys have said was my problem. jumping too much in grits.
go back to 1000 and sand in one direction( like this: /////). then with the 1500 go in another direction( like this \\\\\\). that way you be able to see iffen ya refined all the scrathes from the previous grit.

imho trying to sand out 800 with 1500 is like pissing in the wind . i prefer sanding to buffing. how many times have we seen guys buff for days only to have to repaint because they burned it trying to get out scratches .

and burned does not always mean breaking through to primer. over buffing trying to get rid of scratches will over heat the surface and leave a fine vinyl look which will not buff out. use a thermal gun next time you buff. it's scary .
