How should I prep this clear for base ?

I almost have my 2 tone Chevelle back together and now I am wanting to change the color of the fresh air grill to match the hood color.

Should I just scuff this nice 1 year old clear with a red scotchbrite pad and then shoot the black pearl base?

Or would it be worth spraying a light sealer coat of 1:1:1 epoxy over the scuffed clear, then proceeding to base?
 
Fresh air grille-cowl panel? grey scuff pad and scuff paste-knock all the gloss off, then shoot your color.
