How many coats of clear should I spray?

I am using the nortin dry ice system sanding the clear with 1000 then 1500 then finishing with the 3000 on the da.

I am using a 1.3 tip in my lph 400. I sprayed 5 coats on the deck lid just to be safe but now I am wondering if 3 coats would be enough.
How manu coats of clear do you usually spray?

I assume they will be a little thinner with a 1.3 tip is that true?

Not necessarily so. You have to move slower with the 1.3 but you can still get good film build and a smooth finish if it is atomizing good.

depends how you spray. i do 5 or 6 but thats with a mini iwata with a 1.0 tip... makes burning through almost impossible...

Three coats should be fine usually, figure you're going to sacrifice one during the sanding and buffing leaving two on the car. My rule of thumb is two coats if it's not going to be buffed, three coats if it's going to be cut and buffed, three coats/sand/2-3coat reclear if I want show quality. If you have graphics/tape lined to bury that can also affect how many coats need to be applied. Clear selection can also make a difference.
