HoK Base and SPI intercoat

I have to paint a bike soon with HoK bases and SPI intercoat with flake. I've never used intercoat before or sprayed HoK base for that matter. I'm using SPI 2k sealer, bc02 base, kbc12 kandy base, SPI intercoat with flake and SPI clear. I don't know yet whether the intercoat will be under or over the kbc as I don't have the flake yet to do my spray outs.

I need to know whether or not to activate the HoK bases, tech sheet says its not needed but the intercoat says it should be. Would I put activated intercoat over unactivated base or should I activate it all?

If I do activate the HoK bases can I use my SPI clear activator or do I need something else?

how should I mix the intercoat to carry the flake and how many coats can I put on?

Also I have white sealer, some pieces of the bike have been primed with unreduced sealer other pieces are factory black. Is the white sealer going to completely cover black? If not what's the best way to get the black pieces a consistent color with the primed ones? It's quite a few black pieces and would rather not have to prime and sand them all unless I have to. Not sure how important it is for them all to be exact same color before bc02 -----@--------- Silver.

Been using SPI clear and epoxy for a few years and love everything I've tried, I think this is my first post here. Any help will be greatly appreciated as this job has gone from a standard bc/cc job to him wanting all this other stuff I'm not familiar with.

Use the UV activator in all of the basecoats, I bet the sealer will cover just fine, what size flake is going in the intercoat clear?

.004 flake I feel like its going to kill whatever kandy effect the kbc12 gives unless it goes underneath but I feel like he's gonna want it heavy overtop of everything.

I'm using production clear on this one will that activator work in the base as well or will I need universal activator?

I'd reduce the intercoat 150%, you might have a tough time keeping the flake suspended in the clear so give the gun a good shake now and then. I've sprayed up to 7 coats in a session and had good results. Depending on the colors the flake might look best under or within the candy.

When activating another base such as HOK or DBC with UV activator what ratio is recommended?

John L.

John,
Some bases can handle 4oz per mixed quart and some only 2oz per mix quart, this is why we always say one ounce per mixed quart as to not to over activate.
Nice thing about base is just a little makes all the difference in the world, so no need to over do it.

Also taken into account here is all activators have different solid amounts.

Just to throw a wrench in the works, different clear activators are of differing strengths. For example, you could get away with using more Universal clear activator, because with its 1:1 ratio, the isocyanates are more dilute than the Euro, which uses very concentrated, syrupy activator because if its 4:1 mix ratio. I think 4oz per quart of Euro activator in most basecoats would probably be overkill, but with UC activator, it would be OK.

Thanks for all the info. One more question about Intercoat, if he decides to go with a .008 flake could I use the Intercoat to bury and sand it flat before I proceed or do I need to use clear coat to do that?

Definitely do the burying with urethane clear. Intercoat is a good product, but it's not really designed for that kind of film build.

Never a good idea to bury anything using basecoat and all intercoat clear is is a clear base coat, use the intercoat to protect the flake and for protecting colors under neath for slight sanding corrections but it could be real problems down the rad using any base as a filler or blocking agent.

You are exactly right, the euro is 90.1 solids in the activator can, so it would be very dangerous to try and second guess these, that is why we settled on one ounce per mixed quart.
Some painters just use a cap-full from the activator can per 1/2 or full mixed quart, some use two but here nor there, a little makes the base a different product altogether.

I like everything bullet proof that way I don't need to hire body guards. LOL

Thanks for the help. Production clear was way better than I expected!

I loved it but I already knew I would. Used to use rm bc00 I like the SPI better.
