Hi, TransAM_Stan here with plenty of questions...

TransAm_Stan

First post on this very unique & informative forum.

A bit of background is in order.

I have not sprayed anything in over 15 years. Technology has marched ahead while I have not. I am trying to get back up to speed before I make anymore purchases. Hopefully with your help I can keep my "oops" to a minimum.

I will be spraying a 76 Trans Am in white. Total restoration. Right now I am in the metalworking stage (full qtrs. & tail pan). Car is totally apart (well real close!) I am trying to collect pieces parts for the painting stage of the resto.

I will be posting a thread in the restoration section (this weekend) of my homemade spray booth as well as my home made compressor air cooler as well as pics of the restoration as it sits today.

For any interested parties I have a thread going here...

I did mention SPI...

I have purchased from SPI the following:

1 gal Epoxy Black & Activator
1 gal 2K High Build Primer grey & Activator
1 gal W&G Remover

I have 2 guns. (dont laugh) A Sharpe 975 & a Astro AS-7 siphon feed. Can I use either of the 2 for the application of the Epoxy? While I am at it I cannot for the life of me find my tip size. The Sharpe Has a gold ring around the tip.

Will either of these 2 guns apply the 2K primer?

Final Q for now is 2 fold. What gun is recommended for the application of color & clear? I know its a personal preference, but as of now I do not have a clue. I just do not want to spend 400 bux for a gun if one for 300 (200 sounds better!) will do. Even a used on from fleabay. This is one subject I am totally clueless.

If the above guns will not spray the primer, can anybody point me in the right direction?

I will have SEVERAL questions regarding the painting process as I progress with my resto. I hope you peeps do not get tired of my seemingly endless noob questions!

BTW: I have not unpacked my SPI products I bought on 8/30/11. I just noticed on the packing slip that a little birdie included a quart of Universal Clear & activator. You cats are top shelf!

Regards,

It is a pretty safe bet that both of those guns will spray the epoxy with proper adjustment.

The 2k primer, will be another story not knowing the tip size of the gun but if I had to give one gun a chance with the 2K, it would be the AS7.

Stan,
There are a lot of quality used guns for sale and many are hardly used at all and have years of life left in them.
The SATA RP, the Iwata LPH400 and the DeVilbiss Plus guns all get rave reviews as clear coat guns. Of course you can spray base with them as well if you choose to use one gun for both.
Just be sure your compressor puts out enough CFM to handle the gun you are looking into.

Thanks for the info gents! Yes I would like to spray base & clear with one gun.

I am on the hunt for one of the three guns mentioned...

I bought a gun barry recommended and love it, i have always used my 2 geos and barry recommended a walmec which i got on ebay for under 200 and works great

I've sprayed plenty of clear through Devilbiss guns and have had good success. They are little air hungry (alot of cfm required compared to other guns) but good guns. If its a new gun, thats a good price for a mainstream piece of equipment. Not sure what a cup will cost you though...

although some consider the top brands like iwata or sata pricey, their re-sale value is really really good!
