I can't tell you how glad I am to find this forum. I have been reading for days. I have also learned YouTube is not necessarily my friend when it comes to assimilating "good info" I recently purchased a Fuji System for wood working projects but quickly learned it's benefits in automotive touch up. I have a 5 stage turbine and decent gun and have had some really breathtaking results on some smalll pieces parts. Even though my skill level at painting could be compared to marksmenship as a Monkey with a Machine Gun...

I have an 03 F150 and thanks to the wizards at Ford, they designed the roof channels to hold water. And it works perfectly. The roof is shot and rusting fast. I have already DA'd the worst of it but didn't have time to go any further. 2 different shops told me to take a hike and they wouldn't touch it. My goal here is simple. Stop a possible water intrusion into the headliner. Whatever my next step is it maybe a few days or more before I can do the "next thing" My thoughts are these.....
Spot the deep rust with converter.
Then SPI epoxy (WH) if a week or two goes by could I then scuff the epoxy primer and then shoot my SS white? Or would I need a flash coat of high build first. This truck lives outside,

I'm fearful if I try to sand too deep I will make daylight in the roof and in a short time the truck will smell like a Terrarium inside. Does SPI have a Por15 type product that could cease the rust? Other than this roof issue it's a perfect truck and I'd like to keep it a while longer. Any sound advice on "next steps" would be most appreciated. *almost forgot, in two of these channels in the rear I discoverd body filler that the previous owner must have glopped in there so this ain't a new problem by any stretch. Thanks again.

Lots of temporary fixes. Only permanent one is to remove rust completely. No conversion coating or POR-15. It is hard to tell how bad it is pitted from the picture, but if not too bad, Ospho may be a solution. You need to get something on that bare metal while you still have a roof to repair.

Like TK said only real solution is to strip it and remove the rust. POR-15 is snake oil. You could do it in just a few hours with the right tools.

These work well on an angle grinder:

These work well with a die grinder:

I usually use both on a job such as yours. Strip it, then DA with 80 grit, clean it with W&G remover and you are ready for epoxy.

I put por 15 on the interior of my mustang and all it did was make me poor
It’s expensive compared to spray paint that would have done better
I am redoing it with spi expoxy and half of it comes off in sheets and is starting to surface rust

I appreciate everyones professionalism and attention to quality work. I am going to give this my best shot. But in the end this truck is not worth $5K. I'm terrified to remove the body filler not knowing what's beneath it. So Im going to grind as much of the visible rust as I can. Then epoxy it, and take it from there. I'll share my success (or failure) once it's finished. As a non professional looking in and seeing what you guys do. You are somewhere between artists and chemists, and what you do with cars and finishes really is dazzling to the average schmuck, which I am one of. Thanks again.

I too have a 4 stage turbine i use for cabinet work in houses. I have sprayed primer with it but thats as far as i have gone with it on the automotive side of things. Good Luck with that roof.

Don't short change yourself! Say, " I'm an extraordinary schmuck"!

I have an 03 F-150 SuperCrew and my roof is fine! That's not Ford's work you are seeing, that thing has had someone else working on it at some point in time.

I suppose it's hard to tell, the design on this truck is really kinda idiotic every piece of trim from the door handles to the side pieces to the fenders all hold water it gets water under there and then algae starts and no matter what you do you can't stop it. But before it becomes a convertible, I have to get this shored up. My 2000 7.3 Super Duty has zero issues.

I would sand all of that down to bare metal and give it a clean go. From the distance the picture affords, that only appears to be rust on the surface that hasn't deeply pitted or put holes in your metal. It will not take you very long to get to bare metal because there won't be a lot of finish on there. Then you can put on your epoxy and single stage.
