help with spi red

blue 66

How much does the color of the primer or base affect the color of spi red
.The sanded base I plan on shooting the spi red on is a medium blue color that had universal clear on it.It is dull now that the clear was sanded with 600.Will I be good with that???I will have plenty of spi red for coverage just not sure how well it covers.
thanks
Gary

Blue and black are the two colors I spray the red on when we make a batch for final testing.
Two coats (wet) is full coverage as far as hiding.
So three coats should be good.

Problem is I can't say how many coats it takes for a true full coverage before the under tone does not change in the sun.

Doing blue, I would do four coats, unless you do a test panel first and look at in sun.

blue 66, if you have a local jobber that you buy material from, they should be able to provide you with a black & white sprayout card. You can apply coats of base to it until you can no longer see through the paint. Try to apply the coats just like you will to the car and when hiding is achieved (look at the card at an angle in the sun) you will then know how many coats it takes for TRUE hiding.

Not to discount Barry's advice at all, this is a generic procedure followed by most painters at most shops as a general rule, to avoid redoes.

Why not just spray a sealer coat of either white or gray epoxy, and use less of the more expensive red base?

I guess that would depend on if you wanted a true SPI red color or a lighter variant. Many guys put a white undercoat to give the paint job some pop but if the undercoat affects the final look it isn't really true coverage.
