Help with base

I sprayed SPI black base last night. The previous day I had sealed with one coat of reduced epoxy. I used waterborne wax and grease remover to clean, waited about 2 hours, tacked off twice, and put on two coats of black with my Devilbiss finishline gun. I'm getting this grainy texture in a lot of spots. I sprayed the hood and front fenders, the hood has most of the texture. I sprayed the hood last, I'm wondering if the paint cup was getting low and as I was holding the gun horizontally to spray the hood and air was getting incorporated into the paint. Is that possible? Any other ideas? Obviously, tonight I'll sand everything and re-apply base, just trying to prevent this from happening again. Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for the reply, I'm painting it at home in my garage with a makeshift booth, but I did take every precaution I could to keep the dirt and dust out of it. The only thing that makes me think it's not dirt is that two of the three panels turned out fine, only the hood had these spots in it. I tacked it off right before I sprayed. Also, it's almost the entire hood, so I would think if it were dust/dirt, it would be more spotty. This is pretty uniform. I prolly just suck at painting.

Its weird that in the pics that all of the specs look like little balls instead of just plain dirt. Did you have some kind of desiccant moisture filter inline that may have come apart?

I do have a bead-type dessicant dryer but it is plumbed before another filter/dryer combo, so I don't think anything got in the air lines. I did pick up a new air hose today just in case. I'm going to sand some of the areas tonight after work and see if there's anything "inside" the "bubbles." They really seem like air bubbles that popped through the surface to me, not sure what would have caused this.

Looks like water, cut one with a razor blade, see if air or liquid.

The desiccant should be after the water and oil separator.
Is desiccant good?
Also were the good panels painted first and then the compressor heated up?

Sorry if I wasn't clear earlier, I have a water and oil separator/desiccant first, then a Devilbiss QC3 filter/desiccant after that. The first desiccant is dry, I can try changing the cartridge in the QC3, but it doesn't show on the indicator that it's bad. I drain the air compressor after every time I use it for an extended period.

The good panels were sprayed first, the hood (the panel with the spots on it) was painted last. I have a fairly small (30 gal) compressor at home, but it didn't cycle on more than a couple times since I only painted those three panels. Thanks for everyone's input, I want to make sure I don't make the same mistake when I spray again after sanding.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice. I sanded and re-sprayed my base today. Everything looks better this time. I think it might have been moisture in my air lines. I put new air hoses on and changed my dessicant.

I did have one spot that a fly landed in on my second coat. I'm not sure what the best way to treat this area is before spraying my clear. Any tips? Thanks a lot for your help.

Sand the fly prints out with 600-1000 wet and spot in some more basecoat over that area, let it flash for an hour and shoot your clear.

Thanks a lot to everyone who offered advice. I think the problem I was having was dry spray. I have never sprayed anything but primer and was afraid to put the base on too heavy and get runs. I shouldn't have worried about it as much as I ended up having to sand and rebase a couple areas anyway, and it wasn't that big of a deal. I wish I would have just sprayed the base down nice and wet and moved on. Live and learn I guess.

Anyway, got two coats of SPI black (some spots more like 3 or 4 ), and 3 coats of Universal clear on today. I need to do some wet sanding and buffing, and I have a couple runs to fix, but need to spray the rest of the car first. Here are some pics. I'm very happy with the results for my first time painting. I think by the time I sand everything smooth it will look great.
