Flake Buster or Spray Gun?

I am about to do a flake job with .004 flake. do you think that it will spray out of a 1.4 sata

Most of the time your flake company will recommend a certain size tip for the flake size you are shooting. That being said, I don't think you will have a problem.

You just have to mix it and try it, really dont know how it will lay out with a small tip. KemFx does say their .004 can go thru a 1.4 tip, but like shine said, it really depends how much of your flake is mylar and plastic color and how much is metal. I just think of a 1.3 or 1.4 tip as trying to get as fine and smooth as a layer down. You are not looking for fine or smooth with flake, you want quantity to get a better idea of how its gonna look when you clear for that instant its wet. I guess you are considering maybe putting down possibly 6-8 coats with a 1.8, that might end up being 12-15 going on less at a time.

Found a tech sheet on .004 flake

Basically says you can use small tips, but the fluid adjustment will need to be open all the way and it can be difficult to control when sprayed in such a way.

Just thought of another question. Would HVLP or traditional be better for spraying flake suspended in intercoat or clear?

definitely HVLP with todays flake. Its what you want, high volume. Like I said, do the glass jar test, if it settles in half the time, it would take to spray it, then just fill your cup halfway. Otherwise, the clear liners let you see what your mix is doing. you just keep moving it as much as possible. it worked fine with the gravity feed.

You will see spraying .004 flake is easier than laying down a metallic basecoat, as long as your tip is big enough where your liquid knob is not turned all the way out. I would still recommend the 1.8 tip so you can keep your fluid knob closer to what you are used to.

I didn't mean gravity vs siphon, I meant high pressure gun or low pressure gun. I saw Sharpe has a large needle siphon feed gun when I was finding a filter for my Sharpe air dryer.
