Hey all,
New here, new to automotive painting.
I have a 69 Coronet that I have gutted to a shell and will be taking down to bare metal. Im going to need to do some rust repair in the usual spots (lower quarters, rear window channel, trunk). Shouldnt need panel replacement, just patches.
I was going to leave it at that and let the pros do the wet stuff, but I decided that Id like to try it myself. This car is not # matching, and will not win trophies, it is strictly a driver that just needs new metal and paint. I figure if Im going to learn, this is the car to do it on. I also have a buddy who shoots cars on the side who can help me out if needed. If it turns out Im just awful, Ill pass the work along to him....haha.
Anyways, I plan to use all SPI primers and clear and Prospray base and Im wondering how much Ill need.
Im doing all interior, engine bay, truck, underside,.....basically everything except I will have a vinyl top and a lift off fiberglass hood.
I was just going to do epoxy on top and put vinyl over that, but heard I should do paint it like rest of car, then do the top. What do u think? If I have to paint like the rest, Ill probly just forget the vinyl.
Also, do I need to clear trunk, interior, and underside?
Sorry, if these seem like extreme newb questions, but....I am a newb.
So I was going to get SPI epoxy, 2k high build, and univ. clear (along with wg remover and reducer) AND Prospray base (its a light green, if that matters).
I already have been going back and forth with Chad for the prospray...just waiting to hear back.
So what do u think Ill need?
Thanks guys, I plan on learning from all of you.
Almost forgot....Im also going to order a bunch of supplies.
Is the 3m charcoal disposable respirator (7192) OK? Any preferred goggles and gloves?
For sanding blocks, I was going to get Durablock....should I get the whole 6-7 piece kit? Or do u think I could get by with a 5 1/2 and 11?
Do u recommend I get nib files (coarse or fine or both) and/or run blockers? Or can I do without them?
Thnx!
