favorite sandpaper grit between clear coats

i see 320 and 400, and yet ive seen guys get it almost polished with 1500 before last clear coats. the perfect paint job says 400-800. opinions and experiences gentleman?

320-400 sounds a little coarse to me if just shooting a couple coats, I like to use 800grit if I sand the clear then shoot 2 slick coats

The last part i painted black ..i sanded out with 600 and i could see some sand scratches. Sanded out with 800 re cleared and it was fine.

I haven't seen any problems using 320 dry and shooting 3 more coats of UV, sounds way too coarse but I haven't seen any scratches show up. If you're trying to shoot a flow coat for delivery out of the gun I would suggest 600-800 grit and only shoot two slick coats.

P400 is the same as the old 320 cami scale we all grew up on.. Ive done P320 and could see the marks in the clear after a flow coat..

Personally I think P400 is best.. It cuts the clear flat, removes all the wave and peel and is perfect for more clear.. Ive tried 600 and 800 and I could still see wave after the re clear, cut and buff.. Again, everyone is different here.. I dont use a hard block with it most of the time either.. I use a soft foam block so that will also play a role.. Plus 3M P400 dry paper cuts fast and even.. I can sand the clear on the car in half a day easy and be ready to stick it back out in the sun to bake and gas off

Remember this is a loaded question.. Some guys will swear by every diferent grit you can imagine and have some reason or another for it...

With spi clears, the P400 wont fail you.. Other clears maybe it could be an issue? I dunno. Before spi, I used 500 wet if I re cleared something.. Now I always use the P400 and it works like a charm every single time..

Happy Sanding

haha i got a job at a woodshop. just stripped and sanded 1800 linear feet of redwood trim and paneling and just stripped and sanded 60 pieces of teak outdoor furniture, sanding all day at work then i have to sand clear if im not tired...
