Epoxy questions--reduction for a given tip size, what paints can sit on top of

Hi everyone,

I've heard great things about SPI products and plan to buy some of the epoxy primer soon. That said, I often use a detail gun when painting my projects (toolboxes at the moment) and wondered if I can shoot this product with a 1.0 tip? If so, what sort of reduction ratio is advised?

I also have a spare, full-size HVLP gun with a 1.2 tip and would like reduction advice for that size as well.

I'm painting these days with either tractor enamels or AutoAir waterborne paint. Will these paints sit on top of the epoxy ok? And are there any special gotchas I need to watch out for if I use SPI clear on top of the AutoAir paint?

Thanks!

It will spray fine as is with no reduction out of either gun. I would think any of those paints will work fine.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I've been going over the tech sheets on SPI's products and it looks like tip size is very important on the clear coats, but not as much on the primers?

I use Auto air over SPI epoxy and under universal clear with no problems. I've used a Devilbiss SRi Pro with 1.0 tip for both.

If you use tractor enamel, see if they have the little optional hardeners to go with it, that will make it able to handled and used much sooner and give some chemical resistance also.
