dry film thickness of SPI epoxy?

What kind of dry film thickness will I yield with 2 wet coats of SPI epoxy unreduced?

Can a greater film thickness be achieved with extended induction time?

Thanks.

Dave

SPI epoxy goes on thicker than what you would think after looking at it in the cup, and the longer it sits in the cup the thicker it gets. I have sprayed it with a 1.3 without a problem, 48 hours after mixing, but I normally spray 6-10 hours after mixing and with my 1.3 and the way I spray, its about .001" thick per coat or 1 mil.

I like to check to see how much material I have on the panel, but of course (one dry coat thickness) depends on many factors, all of which you are very familiar with.

Right, I guess my question is a bit vague.

I guess I was expecting I could get away with using a 1.6-1.8, without flooding (overdoing it) I was just looking for some input on what I can expect to build with it. I've seen photos of what it looks like dry blocked with 180 grit and I couldn't believe how well it appeared to be working in the photos.

This is one of those questions that is really hard to answer as so many factors involved.
I always use either my Iwata 1.4 or RP 1.4 and I do spray it like I would a clear, my average has been 2.8 to 3.2 after two wet coats measured the next day.
Remember most ecoats from the factory are .7 of a mil, so anything more is additional protection, so if you are averaging 1 mil per coat, that is good.

1.3 is all that I have used, but others do use bigger tips and seem to have very good results. I'm sure they will chime in later, but they may not know how much they are actually putting on, and thats why I replied.

Thanks Barry, a 3-ish dry film after 2 wet coats sounds really good for what I have in mind.

Looking to get away from spray poly on future jobs if possible. Laying it on with a 1.4 with the passes being closer to that of base/clear applications also sounds really good. I would not be sad about retiring my 2.2 snot shooter. In fact, you have given me an idea. My gravity plus gun may become my new SPI epoxy gun.

I do have time, as long as I juggle the projects right. I try to keep 3 projects in the shop at once so I can let one sit for a while if needed and keep working on a different project.

I spray my spi epoxy with a gravity plus 1.4 with a gti aircap. Really cuts down on over spray. Sprayed at 18-20 psi on guage. It works good for me. I usually do 3 coats, filler, epoxy, reduced epoxy as sealer, then color, clear. Course different situations call for different solutions so nothing cut and dried.

Thanks, that's good info. The plus cap does make overspray, lol!
