differences in base coats

B

BUSHMASTER

lets say name brand like ppg vs the cheaper omni
and dupont vs nason
you hear the cheaper line doesnt cover as well so you need more material, but what else is different other then the price is a 3rd less
base/clear btw

if your doing cheap car lot work it's fine i guess. but second line paint is cheaper for a reason and not just because they are being nice.

You will research this forever and never find a comparison of paint products that everyone agrees on. Seems to be like beer. I have been looking into this for a while and all I have found is the lower priced paints may require additional coats for coverage which uses more paint which negates some of the savings and gives you more chance to screw up. I have thought about using a second line color and top line clear. Now don't take this wrong, I use SPI epoxy and regular 2K and the products work great for me but locally I have found no one that has even heard of them so are they second line?

So is something "second line" defined as something you've never heard of or just a second tier of a product line?
Personaly I take it as a point of pride I'm not paying premium prices for a premium product shipped to my door.

The only thing this thread can possibly end up being is opinion and conjecture, since there is no published information on the subject because the compositions of various basecoat products are trade secrets.

This thread may end up being deleted on the basis that it may cause strife and division.

SPI has proven you can't judge quality by price and local availability, neither have any bearing on quality. There's some color lines that provide premium results without a premium price and if you poke around enough here you'll see what products are chosen again and again because they work well. Omni vs. DBC, DBU, Global, Nexa?-any would be better than Omni. Nason vs. Chroma Base or Chroma Premiere?-both are better than Nason Just my opinion though... Start a poll, I'm sure you'll see a trend.

High end base sprays better, blends/matches better and covers better. Just my experience. I still do overall with economy lines.

The biggest thing with good bases vs cheap bases is tint grade, that the user has no clue what is used, until it fades and of course dry time on some of the enamel conversions.

A very confusing issue and I guess the best answer is most standard type insurance repair shops have all been burnt by the cheap ones and that is why they pay more for the better ones.
