Consumables shopping list

A

Ash

Hi guys,

In prep for leading up to body work and painting, I'm slowly gathering the things I need. Being in Australia, everything is priced stupidly high compared to what you have access to in the US. I need to buy some things and wanted to get the consumables I'll need at the same time to combine postage and to save what I can.

Question is, can someone give me a bit of a shopping list of the typical brands you would recommend and quantities you would use per spray job. For example, I need to buy masking tape, paper, tack cloths and all that that you would use along the way. But what is the pick of the bunch and how many of each would you think I should order?

The more I read, the more I learn and also the more I find out but at the same time there is such an overload of info on here. When I do look for something specific, I end up going off on another tangent of something else that is helpful and only end up confused between which is best.

I am a wood worker so have a good range of tools but most of my consumables are not really auto specific. I'd really like to get the majority in one hit and not have my order arrive to only find myself to have enough to get through half way.

I have come across this seller who appears to have a wide range and are also happy to ship and combine post for me. But if anyone has any other recommendations for this too, I'm happy to look around for the best deal.

My SPI paints are on their way. I have lots of work ahead of me but am keen to dive in head first! :D

Thanks for all your help!

Cheers,

Ash

Order twice as much as you think it will take. If you have leftovers you will use them on the next project. ( yes it is addictive and there will be a next project, lol)

Hahaha, I had already planned to do just that. I also plan to spray my F150 as practice for my Mustang.

If I know what I should expect for one, then I will know what I will need for two plus a little extra just to be safe.

How about something like this, a box of 6 rolls, how far will this get me? Will it see me through a car or would two boxes be preferable? And is this the tape I should be using? Or maybe a box of 1 inch and another box of 1.5 inch?

Sorry if this seems a bit silly guys, I'm really just taking a stab in the dark. I know I'll more then likely forget something or run short of something else. But if I can get the majority of it in a single go from the US, I'm leaps and bounds ahead of buying it locally.

Thanks

Thank you, I appreciate you offering some advice! I'm also the type of person who will have to duck up to the shop for something, seems to always be the way. :D

Fresh spray masks or canisters - I have one of these but need to get new/suitable filters. I was also considering one of the air supply systems.

Gloves - Have
Spray suit or coveralls - Have

I'm guessing I can't go wrong with any of the 3M products? They seem to be the most used I have found. It is just the types and quantities I am unsure of.

Thanks again!

I think sometime ago when searching I had come across a comparison and that one you mention was in it. There was also this one and from memory the report on both was much the same. I bookmarked this one simply due to the lower price.

But I'm still not 100% sold. I think I could use that money better elsewhere in my rebuild and use the mask I have.

I have a love hate relationship with my fresh air system. The air hose is usually a big pain in the you know what.

However, I use it when I'm doing anything, grinding, sanding, welding. Those little 3M paper masks that i see most people wear during grinding don't seem to do anything for me. Maybe my face is weird shaped or something, but as soon as I touch the grinder down, I can smell that "grinding smell", and at the end of the day have black snot when I blow my nose.

The fresh air system eliminates all that.

Now, the actual paint respirators fit much better than those little particulate masks, but I still don't like to worry if I used it too long, didn't close the bag right, etc. Plus they are expensive if you have to keep buying them. The air pumps have lower consumables, just a basic particulate filter at the inlet, which where my pump is located, has never needed to be changed.

With some of the crap in these paints, I figure better safe than sorry.

I understand where you're coming from. And I don't like the paper style face masks either. I work with timber most of the day and even though the paper ones aren't good, they do a better job then nothing. I'm still fighting saw dust in my workshop but am making progress, it's a tough one to beat. Wearing something like a air supply just wouldn't work for me in that situation as I'm all over the shop the whole time. But I can easily see it being beneficial if you were at a set station and working on one thing.

Breathing in paint fumes is not good though and with this much primer, filler, base and clearcoat, it's a bit of a worry. If I can get my ventilation and air flow right in my spray area, hopefully the mask I have with a quantity of quality filters on hand, hopefully that will do the job. I'll be testing before I dive in though to be sure.
