clearing over pinstripe.

Hey guys, I personally don't like the look of pinstripe on top of clear I like it to be cleared over and smooth so you don't feel the line. I use universal clear and HOK pinstripe. Should I apply maybe four coats over the pinstripe, wetsand then do a flow coat? I'm just afraid of burning through on the pinstripe when I wetsand and buff.

Really 2 coats is enough the burry a pinstripe but nothing wrong with 4 either. I normally do 3 or 4 block with 400 and then flowcoat.

I am not a proffesional painter I have only painted about 7 cars in my time but can you explain what a flow coat is

(clear, sand, clear again) The last application of clear flows better than the first-"flowcoat".

Flowcoat is when you wetsand your clear with say 400-600 depending on how much you put on and then reclear as this helps it "flow out" also build your UV prtection and chip resistance. Only should be done on higer quality clears IMO..

Jim, here's my plan of attack. The truck I'm doing is going to be a black and orange two tone with a flame design to break the two colors up. Doing the orange first then masking off my design then spraying black. Unmask and shoot 2-3 coats of universal. Wetsand and do my shadowing and pinstriping then reclear. One reason is because I'm not as good with the shadowing as I am with pinstriping so if I make a mistake I can erase it off of the sanded clear rather then fresh base. Sound good to you or do you have a suggestion? Thanks

pw, yes that exactly how i would do it. you really need to pinstripe over sanded, smooth clear anyway. a paint edge from a design screws with a striping brush. i have tried many times to pinstripe a design on base and it just doesnt work out.
