Clear Specific gun for SPI

Hey guys, I have a Finish Line Plus gun now, it is getting a little old and some of the parts are showing wear. I am thinking instead of replacing the stuff that maybe I should opt for a new clear gun and maybe keep this one for base coat.

I have switched to SPI universal clear for all my projects, so before I get a new gun, I figured I should check with people that spray SPI the most and get their input. I was over on the autobody forum where I got some advice on a clear gun http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=ABS&Category_Code=3SAG

Sagola Extreme. It may be a good gun for spraying clears but the clears that most shops use are not SPI and I think that SPI seems to be a little more gooey/thicker than most regular clears.

What would you recommend?

I have that gun with both the clear cap, base cap and aluminum liter cup, the gun does a good job and as far as I'm concerned close to the Iwata and Sata Rp for clear.
My concern would be the company as they don't have a clue and now on their third master distributor for USA and the deal they are pulling with Len, although its a great deal, means a paint store is not going to stock this line when he is selling at their cost plus, say $40 and down the road you may have an issue getting parts because of this.
I paid almost $800 for my gun set up and I bought their best primer gun to try because, I was thinking about doing a primer gun giveaway but now I won't as I don't want people calling me if problems getting service down the road.
It is a good gun overall and seems to be well made.

Gotcha, Thanks Barry. As I said, I bought a half decent gun to shoot base and clear but as I am getting better at painting, I figure now is the time to get a decent clear gun.

I figure if I am going to shoot SPI exclusively I might as well talk to the people that shoot it every day. I want to eliminate my gun as a possibility for screw ups so that I know it's my talent that needs work.

Is there a short list of guns that work very well with the SPI Clear?

Like Barry said, just about everyone on here seems to be using either the Iwata lph-400 or the SATA RP

I had the same question and had been looking at the Iwata LPH-400, but what cap color and tip size is best? I was leaning towards the 1.3 with a silver cap.

I have a 1.4 with a silver cap. I use it for epoxy sealer, base and clear. It has done well for me. 1.4 is probably the most universal tip size.

My off the wall opinion!

First let me say, if you live south of the Mason-Dixon line, you should always use a 1.4 for any high solid clear.
If you live north a 1.3 will be just fine, except for maybe one or two days a year.

NOW my answer to the question, I would go with a 1.4 and silver cap for the simple reason is the gun is not going to wear out and with the constant change of VOC laws, I would question if the 1.3 will be useable down the road.

The other thing is that you can take a 1.4 and adjust the material knob inward until you have the rough equivalent of a 1.3.

the iwata is a slow and deliberate gun . the sata is a faster gun. both are top shelf guns. but you have to match your habits to a gun. if you have problems with runs or dry spots the iwata will likely help as you have to slow down and pay closer attention.

Thanks for the info, I'll start taking a look.

Is anyone using a devilblis PLUS like me? The 1.3 tip doesn't flow enough, the 1.4 is much better, I spray in cold and hot climates with hudmidity between 40-80%. The best I got from the PLUS is a little orange peel aside from any personal mistakes in the past. I've adjusted the air pressure and found that a little high is best, I am over 30PSI at the gun, don't recall the exact number but it is up there. I think part of my problem is that I tend to spray the base a little heavy, about as heavy as I do the clear, so I am thining that could lead to part of my problem. I have some maintenance to do to the compressor setup this weekend so that I am going to start there and see what I got, even after a good cleaning too.

One of my reasons for coming here is the fact that not many people use the SPI Clear, so I would for sure get the experience with it. I will check out the LPH400LV for sure.

The Supernova LS400 Anest Iwata is also doing well with painters. For clear jobs, get the silver cap. The orange cap for the LPH400 is working well with SPI Clears along with the silver cap.

A few months back I changed from using a couple of LPH 400s to a clear and base pair of Iwata WS400 evo compliant guns with 1.4 fluid tips. I loved my LPH400s but wouldn't go back if you paid me.

I use a devilbiss plus and have found that 37 psi and the 1.4 tip is the magic combo for me with universal clear. My fluid knob is maxed out, and fan adjustment just shy of wide open. The wall regulator is set wide-open and then I dial down to 37 at the gun with the trigger pulled. Make sure you do some test sprays at that setting, since our gun regulators might be a bit off from eachother. Since it's a pretty fast gun I find it lays it out nice when I'm 6-8 inches from the panel at that pressure. Any closer and you'll be pushing some urethane wave around.
