Clear over vinyl carbon fiber??

I just did a quick test and it didn't work so good. The detail of the carbon fiber got washed out so it just looks black - weird. Now granted, I just hosed it on on a flat test piece, but I can't imagine the results would have been any different if I did multiple coats. The detail dissapeared pretty much with the first pass.

Just an FYI

That seems odd that it would wash out from clear. My son paints a fake carbon fiber on skateboards with Euro clear on it and it doesn't change anything. I realize it's not the same think as vinyl but he paints over vinyl decals that he creates and clear never changes their look.

Real carbon fiber has a certain reflectivity to it even when immersed, something the knockoff may not have. If it has a coating that simulates the effect, it may be being altered by exposure to solvent. Come to think if it, doesn't vinyl melt in solvent? Maybe a water based clear coating could be put down initially to protect it?
