Changing a Stripe

JimKueneman

Mopar Nut
All SPI from metal out. 5 coats of UC. If I wanted to change these stripes a bit how hard would it be? I would like to not have them roll over the edge and and just have rounded corners and end before the end of the trunk. Could it be done without a complete strip of the trunk? How would you do it?

Pretty simple. prep the panel with 320 or 400. Mask off the black how you want stripe to look, shoot the orange, unmask and reclear. Sand and polish..

Only reason I said 320/400 is because they appear to be solid colors. Metallics would require 600.

If the panel has been already sanded and polished to a glass finish, then just red scotch bright it. less chance of breaking through on an edge IMO.

If the stripe is buried in clear and perfectly striaght, it will be very easy. If it's not, you might have a bit of work to smooth out the area that you want to turn orange.

You would not worry about the stripe showing through under the orange (should I try to sand the stripe down like block sanding it flat?)

Ha, just asked that question! It is close but you can see a bit of a bump. What about the orange covering the black?

SPI basecoats, then no you shouldn't have any issues at all, worst case spot in some gray sealer on the black areas before you put on the orange just so you have peace of mind.

I would definitely do a sprayout to check coverage, the coated cards you can get from your paint jobber. I haven't shot SPI Orange, but most good systems take 3-5 coats for reds and oranges now that they're chromium free. SPI is probably on the lower end of that, just my guess.

I'd use photoshop or the like, use a mouse not sandpaper, tarps, paint ect, print it out and stare at it a month first.
