black base?

440A-body

Starting a new project and the customer wants black, and not just black, but BLACK. Most blacks avaliable have brown, blue tones to them. Blue tones he is OK with, but not brown. How does the SPI base stack up, to lets say HOK straight black, or Ford code UA?

I know that Barry and the folks at SPI put an incredible amount of time money and testing into making the SPI black how they wanted it. There is a thread on here somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. I remember Barry posting a black 55 gal. drum with a few different batches. I have not yet had an opportunity to use the SPI black, but knowing Barry and how much he has invested in creating SPI black, I cant wait to try it!

Nice and black!!!!

I have an F250 black 2012, with a panel leaned up against it form 20-30 feet out the truck looks gray shade black
John has a Z71 black chevy and with panel next to it and standing back the chevy has a brown shade, compared to the panel.

We have lost 100's of gallon of sales because, I have told shops, it is too black for blending collision work. Allover or nothing.

Barry,

Do you have any idea if a blend would be successful using your black to blend over Prospray factory pack black?

It would be a very big risk, it will look good up close but real test is 20-30 feet back in the sun.
Matching black is one of the hardest colors to do anymore.

Thanks for info, I think I have a winner here. I don't see it listed on the web page, what quantities is it avaliable in (a quart would be great) and what is the pricing/avaliablility?

A dark and neutral black is the best thing to start with when trying to match. Most of the blacks I make I have to make custom anyway, Standox in particular seems to have their heads up you know where when it comes to black. I have a binder now with about a dozen sprayouts (and rising) of various mixes as starting points for new custom matches.

Hey Barry, you make me want to get back to work on my 65 vett, cause it's getting your black on it!

Unless something changes with the customer I will be using the SPI black on a 55 in the near future I will try to post some pictures of it when I get it sprayed. It will be several weeks though.

Is SPI base black in 2013 much different than SPI base black 2009?

Not a lot but two main things:
3.798% thinner and the carbon is from South America.
New carbon and going for black as can get and looks like I got it, from feed back.

Thanks Crash, I looked on the site and found nothing under products for any of the ss products. The link has everything I needed. I am getting ready to do my 2001 F350 dually Superduty and want to use the black ss with the clear on the third coat as shown in the link provided. I'll have a few more questions as I get closer but am starting to put the pieces together now.

Gotta love SPI and this site,

well i have a test panel i did with spi, hok, limco supreme, diamont's bc201 deep black and sikkens factory pack jet black. the spi was the blackest by a long shot. i dont think there is a black avail by any of the majors that you could do a repair over the spi with. hok is closest. the rest all look like dark grey compared to the spi. black you have to inspect in hard direct sunlight and the clear has to be polished perfect. when it is the spi is night and day difference. anyone without any kind of trained eye can pick it right out. i should note that all of the blackest blacks look brown when not fully covered so on the side of you mixing cup a brown tone is fine and has no bearing on how black it is. many people add some blue to it to correct this but in the end you are only screwing it up.
