Bit the bullet on a couple of AFS boards - WOW

Everyone has their preference..from straight paneled mopars to early vettes they all require different size blocks. I'm running out of space to put all of em!! lol...i think im going to get my hands on some of these blocks. Always been a durablock man but my favorite one of choice is the 3m yellow one

have 4 of these things, 2 of the smaller ones (7" i believe) and 2 of the smallest ones (5"). IMO cant beat them for flatness. No give at all on these and they dont warp like some of those wooden ones with the aluminum type backing. Wish 3m made them even longer.

Jeremy, watch those yellow 3M blocks-they do warp as they age. I have two that warped beyond use. Mine both curved concave so bad that I had to cut a 1/8" slice through the middle of the handle area and then drill and run a theaded rod lengthwise through the handle with wing nuts on the end to pull it back straight and adjust as it warps more.

That looks like a stout design, nice to have those clamps for wetsanding. JC, is the padding smooth or textured?

Ill keep that in mind. One of them was given to me from a friend who moved out of state. He had the block for years and i've had it since the move. Still as straight as the other new ones that i've bought.

Hookit boards require velcro paper, usually hookit 1, (hooks on tool, not paper) Hookit 2 has hooks on paper, and is only used by 3m, while stickit requires the adhesive type paper with stick backing. I tend to like the stickit style so that you can buy the paper by the roll and tear off what you need easily, while the velco stuff is harder to tear, usually you need a razor or a pair of scissors.

As with all their boards they come in hookit and stickit. You do need 4.5" wide paper for them which is not found in autobody but its common on the marine side. Everything is available in the 3m marine catalog.

It's smooth, and firm.

Dude, you really should pick your words more carefully !! ;)

Well I've put the new boards though thier paces, blocking filler, high build, straight, curves, etc. I'm still sold on them and have no regrets, they are definatly going to help improve the quailty and speed up the process.

I am thinking of getting an AFS block. I what would be the best addition to my collection for working on my 34 chevy? Maybe a 21 or 27 inch long board?

I have:

16 foam with spring steel base (from HF, works great)

24 durablock (useless unless the surface is flat)

Durablock tear drop

it's nice to have a good selection-you might want to have both. You'll use the 21" more than the 27" on that bodystyle.
