Beware of fresh paint

Rusty Gillis
The owner of this car bought it last year and drove it maybe 100 miles and decided he wanted more HP. A shop across from mine built a 347 and changed the rear to a Currie 9" and changed the wheels to Torque Thrusts. This car looked great when he bought it.

While the engine was out he decided he wanted us to install a Rod & Custom front suspension. We were removing seam sealer from the cowl and found that the lower cowl had been patched and never welded and also found this rust.

He wanted us to install a steel bulkhead behind the rear seat and this is what we found

At first we were going to patch the cowl and he was going to drive it a couple of years before we repaired the cowl and repainted the car.

We also found the front floor pans had been patched and the tack welds were bad. The owner decided to have us fix it right. This is what we found under that beautiful paint and a lot of bondo.

They had cut out a section and had a couple of pieces of plastic stuck in there with fiberglass mat over it.

This is what they were covering

If you are buying a car that was just painted make sure you see a lot of photos showing how it was repaired before it was painted. This was done by a shop that thank goodness is no longer in business.

Ouch, that owner is going to learn a valuable lesson. Always two sides to every story, wonder how much was budget and how much was pure hack.

Rusty, please send those wheels to the scrap yard asap.

Wow poor guy! A paint thickness gauge would have caught all the bondo and fiberglass right? This is my fear when I go to buy my next car, I am so leery of sellers now after getting burned (not as bad as that guy, but still). Even if they show me pics how do I know it's the same car.

They are long gone. He had a very hard time selling the wheels and tires.

We installed the Wilwood brakes before we found out how bad the body was.

Are you going to be stripping the entire car down? That really sucks for the guy...

At least he took it to the right guy to have it done.

All new sheetmetal

wow! was that ever boogered up! when people hack stuff together like that for resale they must be sweating bullets that it doesn't start bubbling and cracking up before it sells

wow I just threw up in my mouth a little, what a waste of paint & time. It did look good though.

That is pretty darn nasty. Reminds me of some of the hack jobs I've seen around here. Doesn't look like you've got too much car to work with once you get it stripped down.

this is why a car is more valuable in original condition than in primer. this ford convert is an example. you know exactly what you are buying. this car is 100% original. never been touched and owned by only one person since new .

What a mess. Its a shame people get by with that crap. I agree these days if somebody is looking to buy a classic, they should have plenty of pics of the resto.

Looks like the only thing left is the vin number if that's not all rusted out. The kind of work some saw done on tv and said they could do it and make lots money by filling with body filler.

Wow Rusty.. It amazes me sometimes what people hide behind paint.. I feel bad for the owner.. It's in good hands now.

These are the last photos I will post on this thread. I will start a new one once the parts come in to start the restoration.

The upper and lower cowl came off as one piece only had two small welds close to the windshield pillar on both sides

Question I have is Why? At this point has the owner sunk so much into that he feels he has to fix this? A RestoMod Notch '67 can't have all that much value and it looks like by the time you are done he'll have 2-3 times as much in it as he could ever possibly get out of it. Just wondering.:)

Could you or would you sandblast it in the last pic or 3" grinder with 50 grit work just as good?

I said I wasn't going to add to this thread but I wanted to show what was left of his original Mustang that we could use.

He found a donor body and we will be removing the sheetmetal and epoxy priming everything and fitting new sheetmetal. Today starts the build of his Mustang.
