Basecoat sanding and black coverage

What grit are you guys using to denib or sand blemishes out of the basecoat with? I have used 600, 800 or 1000, depending on how large the problem is but usually finish with 800 or 1000. Concerned about adhesion with 1000. Also, does anyone else have a problem covering 600 grit scratches with Black basecoat? If it's going to be black, I sand the primer to 600 but it just seems to take at least 5 to 7 coats of base to cover the sanding scratches, sometimes having to sand some out of the basecoat. Have had this problem with Chromabase and now with PPG DBC. Thinking it's probably technique....

Adhesion is not a problem no matter the grit when sanding base, since it melts when subsequent coats are applied. As far as visible scratches go, have you seen this after clearing, or just when viewing the base? Black in particular will sometimes look "scratchy" when sanded with 600, but I find the clear covers all that with no trace.

Thanks, crash. The visible scratches are when viewing the base. I have never cleared over them because I was concerned they would show through the clear. I have always continued spraying basecoat until they were not visible anymore (or just barely visible) but that does take more time and material.

Black is one of those colors that just looks awful after the first coat or 2, in terms of sand scratches. Those 600 grit scracthes, you will not see once you clear. It isn't technique, that's just the way it is. Other very dark colors will do the same thing. It's odd how it works, but once cleared you will not see them.

Thanks, jeremy. I cleared the car yesterday and there are no signs of a sand scratch anywhere this morning. I also had some blend edges that weren't pretty but those all disappeared too when cleared. Black is a pain but in the end it sure looks nice!
