Base coat question ?

I will be painting my Chevelle in a few months when weather gets warmer. I have decided to use universal clear because of all the good things I read about it. Can it be reduced ? I had thought of using Deltron base coat but if I use a good clear like the universal clear would it matter if I just used Nason or a cheaper base coat ? It is a nice car and I don't want to go cheap if it would make a difference in the quality of the paint job after all the hours and work I will have to do to get it ready for paint.

There's a lot of color options out there that would be a lot better than Nason IMO. UV can be reduced but there's no need-it sprays excellent as is.

For what it is worth, the SPI dark red is pretty close to the factory color GM used on those cars. The SPI dark red is not as dirty looking when compared to the GM red. The darkness is very close, but it appears to have less brown in it if that makes sense. If you want the exact factory color, without coughing up deltron price, I have heard a lot of others on here that are happy with wanda and pro-spray base colors. If you prefer PPG, I would recommend omni-plus/shopline-plus over the Nason, but that is nothing more than my opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it. I am assuming you are going back red, if not ignore my post :)

Just whatever you do, no Nason or Omni should be allowed within 50FT of that car, EVER!
That car by the way is a beaut!

I always use restoration shop from TCP global for cheaper jobs, its good stuff. Alot like valspar( house of kolor). I use deltron on the really nice stuff though.

Thanks Barry , I ordered the car new and it only has 61,000 miles on it . It was my first new car and I have never let it go because It was something I wanted so bad at that time. I remember the sticker price on it was $ 4,873 . I could have got a basic Corvette for about $5,000 but had a baby on the way. I would really like to see a color chip or car painted with the SPI dark red . Are there any photos on this site or could I write and get a color chip mailed to me ? All I would have to do is repaint the inside trunk lid if I did not go with original cranberry red. One reason I thought I would stay original is because paint inside the trunk is like new. I like some reds and others don't look good to me. I am red - green color blind so I probably see reds a little different than most guys, lol. I will stay away from the Nason for sure. Thanks to all that replied to my question. It has been a long time since I was painting cars and I do not know anything about the new products today or how to use them.

i would shoot it with ppg concept or use SS spi red. i will never understand the concept of working your ass off on something then use bargain bin paint .

If your have bought from us before, I will have an address, if not text me and I will mail color chips to you.

Yes, definitely stick with a quality base on a car like that.. Deltron, Diamont, pro-spray, SPI etc.... Nason and omni are meant for rental car repairs IMO...

I would personally go the Pro-spray route if you dont go with the SPI base.
