Anyone used VIETEK 36-700 W&G Remover?

I searched the SPI Forums using Google before posting but found no results.
My local Jobber, Single Source, carries VIETEK W&GR for $23/Gal. I picked some up to do the initial cleaning of the bare metal. I plan to use SPI 700 and 710 as the final wipe-down of the car before applying epoxy. I also picked up a handful of VIETEK mixing cups from them.
The SDS for the W&GR states it contains (posted verbatim):
- Isopropyl Alcohol.............................1-100%
- Xylene...................................................1-100%
- Light Hydrotreated Distillate.......1-100%
(not very helpful other than to list ingredients)

Has anyone used VIETEK products or have any feedback on them?

Never heard of them, but looking at the products they have, It looks like they are a private label company. Similar to Hi-tech, Advantage, 5 Star, and other brands offered by regional distributors. Those brands are usually less expensive then the national & world wide brands because they don't make any of the products that they sell, they contract out the specs they want to the manufacturers with their own labels. There is nothing wrong with that, it's just that the product can be different depending on what company is making a certain product for them from year to year.

One of the main reasons I took on being a SPI distributor in my area is that the clears and primers I could get through my midwest distributor kept changing, even though the labels and part numbers were the same. One time they would be made by Valspar, then the next batch could be from Cumberland, or General Paint. I never knew what I could get long term.

I don't know if Vietek is that way, it just looks like it to me. If you ever want to know where a product is really made, look at the round printed box certification stamp on the bottom of the cardboard shipping box. Cardboard boxes are usually made very close to where they get sold.

Cleaver idea, looking at the box for clues.
Unfortunately, they handed me the products I bought in a PPG box.

On a side note, the panel looked and felt significantly cleaner after 2 passes with the VIETEK W&GR. Hopefully the SPI 700 and 710 can compensate for any shortcomings or residue.

Thanks for the education,
Emil

That label is a house brand of a paint distributor--National Coatings and Supplies on the industrial/military side and Single Source on the automotive refinish side. Maybe 200 stores and maybe 25 mobile stores in most of the US states now with tens of thousands of accounts. That kind of jobber is not apt to sell you junk from a brick-mortar store. They are similar to WESCO--who gobbled up Albert Kemperle who had a decent line of private label products. The fact their products are oriented toward with jobber in person deliveries direct to end-users with monthly accounts is a good clue to what you can expect in terms of what they are selling-- to create a business with consistent cash-flow is a pretty good sign that there is financial incentive to deliver quality products month over month. Your brick-mortar jobber or van delivery jobber has way too much to lose repping/selling inferior products.

There's a lot of discussion about accurate mixing cups. Be wary of off brands. Check those against the recommended brands.
I have read through the mixing cup threads I could find and don't recall seeing VIETEK on the "Cool Kids" list, which is why I asked about them.
Thanks for the reminder. I will check the scales on the cups to confirm accuracy.

Thanks for confirming Single Source as a reputable firm.

Respectfully, private label products in the automotive refinish industry are usually made to maximize profit potential and the products are made as cheaply as possible. That's the reputation private label stuff has in the refinish industry. 5 Star ifor example is sold in a lot more stores than 200 and nearly everything they sell is garbage. It's just stuff made as cheaply as possible to maximize profit potential. That is the only priority with private label stuff.

The end users of this stuff usually only care about getting something as cheaply as possible as well. Quality is not a priority. Others don't really understand quality differences between products which is where garbage private label stuff flourishes.

If Barry was still posting here he could go into all sorts of detail on why one should avoid private label products.

Which is why I bought it.

I have SPI 700 and 710 that I will use as my last step before epoxy. I wanted something cheap that I could use to remove the bulk of the contaminants I undoubtedly introduced into the metal during my many follies. At half the price of 710, I can afford to drench the surface to remove as much excess contamination as possible before using the "good stuff" to ensure the job is done correctly.

I don't know how good the product is (vague SDS info) but the metal does look and feel much cleaner after using it.

I appreciate your input and assessment. learning as I am, I rely on the advice and opinions of those who know what I don't.

Cheers,
Emil

Just to be clear I wasn't directing my comments to you and your purchase but to the premise put forth by D.A.T that private label stuff can be high quality. W&G remover they (private label companies) can't really screw it up too much. Cheaper stuff is just going to contain more alcohol and flash off quicker.

No worries, I took no offense. I appreciate the value of this forum and the contributions of its members. This is my first project and I have learned many valuable lessons. Things will be different the next time.

Thanks, Dean for the SprayWay suggestion. I guess that would have cost me even less.
