Aluminum/epoxy

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with spraying epoxy directly on aluminum. I had to repair a crack on the bottom of my Mercruiser boat drive and need to refinish it.

yes, just did a couple yamaha outboards. prep no different that anything else. media blast on a lower unit is always best to eat out any of the degraded aluminum that may be there...assuming they are saltwater motors.

Like Jim said but always coat the aluminum the same day you sand it or hit with scuff pad just before coating.

Aluminum almost instantly starts forming an oxide layer on the surface, so soon after definitely is best.

Just to show how much a proper cleaning of aluminum helps, a local Maaco shop does a lot of the little postal trucks & the manager told me they haven't had an issue sanding down into the aluminum with proper prep & nothing special. And they just use cheap nason 2k buff primer directly on the metal.

Everyone thanks for the advice...I had read a lot about using alodine and alumiprep so wasn't sure.

aluminums natural defense system is an immediate coating. I am in the industrial side painting more than cars, and yes, alodine is highly recommended since it forms that protective coating right after the part is chemically cleaned and deoxidized. The dirty word is wash primer here that basically is a spray on coating with phosphoric acid in it, the chromates are changing, but still in there. I dont know alot about that recommeded stuff here, I thought it was called Ospho or Phos, that sounds like more of an iron phosphate type coating that will do the same to aluminum by preventing oxidation while it dries waiting for the epoxy.
