Activate the base?

I'm using PPG DBU w/ hardener, so should I use the same w/ the SPI clear base? I'm just shooting some flake in the intercoat.

I have added spi clearcoat activator to the universal before when I did a job that took many coats of spi intercoat/candy mix. Did 20 coats of candy then 4 coats of clear, I see the thing ever day.. Holding up great.

Chad, did you mean to say "intercoat" where you say "universal?"

Thanks, that's great info. I'm thinking the activator would not be 1:1 like for the clear coat but more like 15%??

Activator for intercoat should be added at the rate of 5% maximum to ready to spray material. The usual recommended amount is 1 ounce per sprayable quart, which is a bit over 3%.

Since I deal with basecoats that have various reduction ratios, I have started adding 6-10% activator to the unreduced amount of base prior to adding reducer. This keeps the ratio of activator to base correct and constant no matter the reduction.
