8N Ford Tractor?

Got a 1950 8N Tractor I would like to clean up and repaint. My first thought was to clean, and sand it real good. Then lay down a couple of coats of Epoxy, but after thinking about it, is the Epoxy gonna lift the old paint?
I tried wiping some Epoxy activator on the red and it seemed to soften it pretty quick.
I really wanted to repaint with a single stage urethane over Epoxy, but I may have to use an enamel.
I'm not looking for a parade finish just a nice presentable refinish.
Anyone have any experience with these old tractors?

The best thing to do, without a question is to take off the old paint and put your epoxy on bare metal. Especially if you are going to the expense of buying red single stage for it.

On one of my tractors, I decided to take the cast down to the origonal red with a wire brush and then epoxy it. Two years later, it still looks great. I just used the Valspar tractor paint from TSC, since it is for work, not show.

OK, That sounds promising, maybe I need to spray a test spot or two and see what happens, cleaning with a wire brush is what I have been doing too. I will go over it good with sandpaper and Scothbrite Pads as best I can before priming. All the sheet metal is getting taken to bare metal but I don't want to blast the mechanical portions for fear of getting abrasive into something.
I'll check on the Valspar, does TSC keep it in stock?

My father and I just did his 2020 John Deere this summer. We sanded most of the old paint off where we could, scotch scuffed where we couldn't then applied epoxy over the whole tractor, then Martin Senior Acrylic Enamel JD green over it. Looks great, hoping for decent durability.
My dad decided to put the loader back on one day while I was at work and used a chain on the fresh paint (palm to forehead) gouging the green but only scuffed the underlying epoxy, so it's some tough stuff.

I have a 9N plow wrench.
Do you need it to go with your 8N tractor?
You can have it for $5 plus shipping.
I found it at a garage sale and thought it was neat.

Lostmy65, I had to Google that to know what it was, thanks for the offer, but I have one in the toolbox on the tractor.

I didn't know what it was when I bought it. It just looked neat. :D
I googled it later.
Some who are into those tractors have paid a pretty penny for one.
It's just a wrench to me. :D

I sprayed a Jubilee last summer for a cousin. He blasted everything but the tractor chassis. He just powerwashed it really good and scuffed whatever was left. I sprayed epoxy on it then used the Valspar from TSC with Euro clear over it. The clear really made it pop. The Valspar seemed to chip off the epoxy pretty easy during assembly though. (wrenches on painted nuts and if something was dropped sort of thing). Would probably last a long time in the field unless you plow over trees and such with it. I sprayed my 2010 John deere with Epoxy and Dupont Centari Acrylic enamel a couple years ago and it seems much more chip resistant than what the Valspar was. Cost 3 times as much though.

I agree, the Valspar comes off the epoxy pretty easy. I am curious if spraying a reduced sealer coat of epoxy a half hour or so before color would help. The Valspar cures really slowly too. Its really easy to beat up during assembly, but it does get quite a bit tougher after a few months.
