Hey guys, my daughter has an 85 Camaro in yellow we are thinking about painting.....another color. Was GM still using lacquer in 85? I seem to remember that some were in water based, but only ones assembled in Ca. due to there strict enviro laws.
The body is very clean, but faded and a couple minor dents from the shelter collapsing on it from the crazy winter we had.
I am trying to get an idea if it has to be stripped down to bare metal....although I know it would make for a better job, we are weighing her options.

You'll be able to tell if it's lacquer because it will be checked. If it's the original paint, it won't take much to get it down to metal. The peace of mind is well worth it, I've done enough jobs like that, and it's a gamble whether or not there will be a problem. I've had enough bite me on the ass to where I have said, no more, all completes over 10 years old or so get stripped.

If she's planning to keep it you should strip the exterior, if the jambs look in good condition just scuff them and seal and repaint. Don't use any chemical stripper on the plastic parts. It all comes down to how long it needs to last, a repaint over 26 year old paint may look good for a few years but will never last as long as a properly done job from bare metal up.

A blend repair on the roof behind the T tops has got that spidered/cracked look to it like lacquer.

Most of the shops in this area were using lacquer for collision and spot repairs untill the late 80's. Does she plan to keep the car for awhile?

I hope so Bob, dad likes Camaro's! I am going to check the vin# to see what plant it was built at, hopefully that will give us a clue what type of paint is on it.

no 3rd gen camaro was ever painted in lacquer from the factory.. that's a fact

was your car repainted in lacquer? possible. why not put a little lacquer thinner or acetone on it and see if it comes off with a white towel?

Only 2 plants built 3rd gen F body's, Norwood Ohio and Van Nuys Ca. I don't know what type of solvent based paint the Norwood plant used, only that the Van Nuys plant started using a water based enamel in about 1981, until 1988 when the Norwood plant stopped F body production and Van Nuys was the only plant to continue F body production, per 3rdGen.Org...

Well I finally got around to checking the vin and it turns out her car was made at the Norwood Ohio plant using solvent based paint.....but still don't know what kind of paint they used, ie: enamel, acrylic enamel, not lacquer?
