66 mustang coupe - need suggestions please!

As with any car whore one cant pass up a good deal, especially when its free!

After looking over the fence into his back yard for years and watching a 66 mustang degrade - hopefully not too badly and a few conversations in the past I called him and asked him to let save it as it pained me to watch it go to hell when it had great potential so a couple of weeks later he came over and gave it to me! Doesn't get much better than that.

Its a 289 , 4 spd car in fairly decent shape & mostly all there, probably has rust, right fender has been banged, interior seems mostly all there so overall not a bad starter. What I'm wondering after following some of guys like Rusty's and others extensive mustang revivals what are some of the realy necessary things to check for, look out for , be aware of, etc.... when doing the first evaluation of condition? You guys who have torn these apart are I assume fully aware of all the pitfalls and I'd like to know them up front if possible.

I'm not certain of direction with the car but I have a 14 year old girl entering highschool tomorrow actually and I've thought it could be a cool project for her to have as a 1st car. Part of me wants to give her a POS Kia that I wont give a crap about but another softer part of me thinks it'd of been pretty cool if my dad had given me something like a 66 mustang or Friebird, GTO, Roadrunner, etc....maybe I'm trying to be better than mine was........

anyways, thoughts, experience, idea's would be appreciated!

Thanks & I'm almost done with the GTX clone, shooting for the Edmonds, WA. car show on the 7th , cross my fingers!

torque boxes, front and rear. front and rear aprons and shock towers, (the front passenger aprons are nearly always trash thats where the battery sets) cowling for pinholes, floorpans, lower quarters, the brace in the roof over the back glass (the name escapes me), a pillars, lower rear quarters, trunk drop offs.

That should be enough to get you started..... oh and the front torque boxes it seems when they are toast that frame section is too but an easy fix.

the shock towers and torque boxes and floorpans/rockers are all of your front tie ins for the unit body, and usually the stuff that is in bad shape.

Pretty sure the early Mustangs didn't get torque boxes, only the convertibles and in the later years coupes and fastbacks got them. (Not trying to be a mustang expert but if he looks under the car an only sees frame rails and toe boards - that might be ok)

True I believe 65 and maybe early 66 only had a drivers side, I think most guys that are in there add the other. Completely forgot about that. Good call.

1967 was the first year to have torque boxes on the drivers side unless it was a convertible and they had both sides in 1965. 1968 was when they had them on both sides of the coupe and fastback. Even the 1967 Shelby GT500 only had the drivers side.
