1966 Valiant for the Other Daughter....

After a good day of blastin..... never mind there is no such thing as a _good_ day of blasting.... I need to get that rear finished so we can get the power train out and on the rotisserie engine stands.... This was a diversion and something I need to pace myself with, just do some here and there so I am not in a place where I have nothing but blasting to do for weeks.... This is a a good chunk done. Just a little air across the compressor can make a heck of a difference.. show your compressor some love when it is running all day in the heat...

More sand in the shoes than on in the blaster at the end of the day... This poor old girl has had a tough life.. every panel has some abuse on it.. shaped a number of things back into a more factory look as I went.

It is amazing how staying in the shade can keep you going much longer. She is ready for her new spot in the garage

After building a sweat lodge and getting some peyote I spent the last few nights conversing with Robert’s Spirit Animal Hawk and have the plan to attack the rear sheet metal. The hawk made me look at it different with it in the garage and I could just sit here and study it with Tequila. I swapped the order of assembly. I need to get the quarter on square with the trunk then the rear panel will be fitted between the quarters and aligned parallel to the trunk. Too many degrees of freedom starting with the the back panel. Friday the welder comes out.

Lord after record rain we get hit with dangerous heat (with no rain).... It sure seems like I did a lot more than the photos shows, I am spent.... I will let the photos do the talking... Tomorrow I need to go to town and get more gas then I can weld in the spot welds on this quarter and run the weld across the back edge of it and it is DONE!!!! Then I can weld in the trunk pan then.... damn do the other quarter panel..... Thank Robert for making this a success... its not perfect but it is better than I ever thought it would be.

Great job, Jim. I guess I'll take over the spot as the head body "filler" man seeing as you are now a clean sheet metal replacement man, lol. Is my jealousy showing?......I'm laying it on pretty thick.....the jealousy part, not body filler :)

Mike,

Mike,

its not at smooth as the photos make it out to be! There will be filler!

Boy it was hard getting started... Took the Dart to town to get more welding gas this morning and sucked it up... Notice I can fail too. Cutting small pieces of sheet metal to put in where I missed with the panel cutting helps keep the panels from drawing together. A bit of planishing with a hammer and dolley on each weld spot helps relieve the stress too. My Spirit Hawk taught me that.... The little pieces of metal make a huge difference in how far the panels try to pull together...

Son of a gun, I had big fun but stick a fork in this quarter its done! I have spot welds along the bottom and in the wheel well but I am NOT welding upside down if I don't have to. Once I have the trunk and other quarter done I will get it on the rotisserie and do those welds in a more comfortable position. The access without the trunk floor is nice... I think I am going for the other quarter tomorrow then the trunk floor... if I can get out of bed....

No idea what happened today. I woke up with my eyes swollen shut and my daughter went the ER because she could not breath. All I can think of is we are allergic to she same thing and it’s in peak bloom with all this rain. Took Benadryl and slept most of the day. Picking up next week I guess.

Good update Jim. Sorry to hear about your eyes and daughter. That was a pretty handy "pro" tip about placing slivers of metal in a gap to reduce shrinkage. Putting that one in the old storage bank on my shoulders for later use. Looks like I was lucky welding up my 1/4 panel cut for a better door gap. The shrinking of the metal I believed was helpful in my situation this time ( insert got lucky, lol )
