10 year old DBC

So I tried to use an opened (10 years ago) can of DBC on a complete and I was fighting to orientate the metallic. Dt885 reducer 1:1 65 degrees plenty of flash times. I’ve used old base a few times over the years, never on a complete just small stuff with no problems. It has this look like the metallic isn’t suspended correctly.
I’ll be getting a new gallon and respray it but I’d really like to know if it’s actually the base or did I lose my touch?!

I can't say anything for sure, other than 885 is pretty slow for 65°. Been about 17 years since I sprayed DBC...

Did you spray in a booth? If not what was the airflow like? Was it mottling? I'm guessing that's what you are referring to as not suspended correctly. Does it look like the metallic is uniform across the car? Or is it splotchy in places? Could be simply the fact that you were spraying it too wet and in cool temps with 885. I've used 885 plenty in a booth in coolish (68 degrees) conditions, but you can't hose it on. As for whether it went bad, IDK. I've sprayed some fairly old DBC many times without issue.

Where was the gallon of base stored for the last ten years' temperature swings?

Maybe a little activator or scfm could have solved the problem, or it could be as simple as using a disposable cup with the strainer inside; as with some metallics, this has been a problem.

Sprayed in a homemade booth definitely not the best condition but have done a few completes in there over the last few years. It’s not really mottled it’s more splotchy and I’ve never seen this before (30 years) lots of air movement and wasn’t sprayed wet where it would have time to move. It didn’t look uniform at all. Almost shiny in spots and didn’t matter how dry I put it on after. Just never have seen this before or had this many issues spraying. It’s a 66 Chevy mist blue and I was getting these little dark blue spots in places and some looked like light blue snow flakes. Probably just me.

Stored in a paint cabinet mostly but know it was moved and could have gotten a little cold at one point. Was opened a few times over the years. Activated didn’t make a difference same problem with and without. Good air movement. Good clean air to gun and several great looking jobs out of the same area. Sata 1.3 4000 b rp tried a 1.4 and 1.2 and looked a little better with 1.2 metal cup and strained on the bench.

I had some dbc that was reduced and RTS from 2003. It was like maybe 10oz. I sprayed it last year in a fender wall art, appeared fine...

i havent sprayed dbc but many bases will do what you are speaking of, kinda splotchy in sheen. it goes away when you clear it. i get that with wanda here and there and it depends on the formula and how much flop controller is in it. flop controller is basically flattening agent. the diamont that i used to spray almost never did that. it would always dry to a very flat sheet but it wanst a very resin rich system and adhesion in that system somewhat borderline imo.
