HOLLEY PERFORMANCE LS FEST CAMARO PROJECT

Nice project. I like the rear body treatment. Not into the orange seat treatment but I always lean subtle and the younger crowd seems to like it.

Spend the extra time to cut and buff. Don't teach the kids to 1500 DA and buff. I've seen these projects before where they really drop the ball on the finish. Those that know don't look at the paint but the first thing we do is look down the side of it. The knowledge to do it right is already in the forum. It just takes a lot more commitment and a bottle of advil.

Thanks all! Brad J., I totally agree about paint. I was taught in a custom shop. I have a shop at home for side money, after all, I am a school teacher! When I do small repairs for folks paying for their own accidents, I cringe a little. Big difference in collision repair and restoration. I am trying to show them just how much hand work is involved in a REAL paint job. I get a kick out of it when they develop an eye for bad work. One kid was looking at a fairly decent repair on a staff members car, and could spot the smallest flaws.

Very true, I talk to shops everyday and they will give me figures of 40 to even 80 hours of buffing time, I think the longest I ever did was close to 25 hours but I'm sure it could have been a better job if I went over the car a few more times but i love to paint and hate to buff. LOL

Main body in SPI epoxy and ready for base. If anyone has used better products than SPI, you've got it to prove to me! Unreal quality and instant tech answers. Unbeatable, Barry!!!

OK, here's the wrap up! WE WON!!! We revealed the car on Sept 7 and raced for three days(Sept 9-11). It competed in the events of AUTOCROSS, ROAD COURSE, 3S CHALLENGE, CHASSIS DYNO CHALLENGE, SHOW AND SHINE, AND QUARTER MILE DRAG. The car posted times that were better than new Camaros. We are most proud of the fact that a high school built car with ZERO testing ran flat out all weekend long, with only a N2O fitting leak. A little thread sealer fixed that. We were scheduled to compete head to head with a car build by our cross town rivals at the technical college (adult level) They, unfortunately, broke on the way to the track! It turns out, they forgot to weld the spring perches and destroyed the rear when the pinion angle went nuts. Here's some pics of the final product. Thanks again for all of the support from SPI and all on the forum. We are currently planning the 2017 car. It will be a 1980 C3 Corvette.

Congratulations on your win! You and your students should be very proud of the accomplishment. That participation and win will be something they will remember for the rest of their lives.
I am 57 and still fondly remember going to the Raleigh State Fairgrounds (NC) in 1975 with my classmates competing in the Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest. (We didn't win.)

It was a TON of work, no doubt. The guys thought they understood what goes into a build, but were given a true wake up call. They answered that call, and I am very happy for them!
