White Base

T

Toms 57 Chevy

I have a question on which white base is the brightest. I want to paint my 57 white then shoot a pearl over that. I want a real bright white like artic or bright white. I am looking for suggestions. Also I was thinking of mixing my own pearl with SPI intercoat. I want a hint of Blue to show up in the sun.

Ford "WT" Performance White is the brightest factory white I have sprayed.

But you don't need a factory color if you are going custom. I like to put a VERY slight lavender cast into straight white toner when I do blue pearl over white, because it kills some of the yellow flop you get even with xyrillic pearls. It makes the flop more off-white instead of yellow. If you do it right no one will ever know there is a touch of lavender in the ground coat because it's hidden by the pearl.

Tom listen to crashtech, don't do a pure bright white base. A few drops of blue, violet, or weak black make all the difference. A straight white will be so bright it will kill the pearl affect, also some tints will help show the curves and shapes better-side tone.

Thanks guy. Would I be better off to find a white with a little hue to it?

I sprayed my truck a bright white and then layed down some pearl with Barry's intercoat..the Pearl effect ONLY shows up when the sun is comming up in the morning or going down in the evening! or under the street lights ! in the afternoon sun it looks pure white- no pearl effect at all ! I agree that an off white should be used.

There's a white GM is using on the 2012 Impala that I really like, looks clean, shows shapes well, but still white, appears to have some blue cast in it-check it out.

Chad, do you think the SPI would work on what I am trying to do. This is all new to me. I am a beginner (but werent we all at some time). I plan to mix my own pearl with the SPI intercoat unless somebody has a better idea. I am open for all suggestions.
Thanks

pearl in SPI intercoat works really well, you'll want to do a test panel to see how much pearl you want to apply and verfiy if that's the affect you're after. Make sure to activate the white and also the intercoat with a little clear activator for best durability and also shoot the exterior of the car assembled so coverage is equal on all panels or there will be a mismatch. Keep in mind going this route makes repairs a little more difficult. What pearl are you planning to use?

Bob I am still researching this. I have looked at the paint with pear web site. I want mix several differrent ones and spray some old test fenders to see what works or what doesn't. Or if somebody has a good pearl paint that they would recommend. I want the 57 to have a blue or maybe a silver hue to give the car some pop. My wife has a 2006 Lexus and it has a little blue in the sun but not as much as I would like.

I'll have to see what one I have, I may have both, I can't remember off the top of my head. You may want to mix together to get the white you want but then you would need both. That being said, you may need both if your doing the whole car.

Yes Chad I will be doing the whole car. Not sure how much paint it will take to do a 57chevy. Pretty big car.
