Which base would you choose?

A guy could read for days on end about this topic I know. I don't have a lot of paint work under my belt but here is my experience, shot a Honda Ridgeline with Dupont Chromabase had great results. I also blended a rear quarter on a Miata with Sikkens had great results, shot my 92 Bronco in SPI black and had great results.

I shot the interior of the 67 Mustang I am working on with PPG single stage Lacquer and had bad results. Laid out super flat no matter what or how I sprayed. I ended up clear coating it and it looks good but i have a spot in the trunk that the clear flaked off some how luckily it is under the trunk mat and we are just going to leave it be. Not sure what caused that but I am praying the dash does not do that.

So I am a little gun shy with the PPG stuff now, not so much the brand but the dealer. They had little advice or even sympathy to work with me at all on the product. I am no pro but I do not believe it was mixed correctly or something was not up to par. A few said it could be blushing due to humidity but I don't think so. I don't really trust that supplier as I stand now and do not want to take any chances on the body. Here is what I have access to in town:

PPG
Valspar
Debeer
Wanda
Dupont/Exalta
Nason

Just kind of wanted to hear from a few of you which you would choose.
My brother decided on a 2008 Shelby Red. Paint code D3 which is Colorado Red which is non metallic. We are also doing Wimbledon White Shelby/Lemans stripes. I am shooting with a LPH400 the Orange Base coat tip and of course SPI Universal clear with the silver tip.

Thanks for the advice -

I am not an expert and have not sprayed it yet but I chose Wanda based on all the exclusively good reviews I read on it.sounds like a best bang for the buck.

Axalta, which was Dupont, makes Standox and Spies-Hecker, either of those would be really good. I hear DeBeers is good also. I would avoid Nason and Valspar, imo.

ppg or wanda like shine said. if standox is avail like crash said then that is good too. all depends on what you want to spend. ppg and standox being expensive. wanda is waaaay cheaper and imo every bit as good. i use it for everything now. put a system in almost 2 years ago.

I now have Moto-Base and Wanda, I know Moto-Base is a line not as many people know about but we have been having really good luck with it.. We also have tried the Wanda on a few things now and have had pretty good luck. Wanda is the cheaper of the two lines.

Chad, I am going to be paint a truck soon. Gunmetal Gray and am thinking of giving the Moto-base a try. Have you shot any grays or silvers?

I did a GM pewter type color, color match was really good. I was also surprised with the quick coverage.

Sat down with my brother and we got prices from each: for the 2008 Shelby Torch/Colorado Red code D3-

Wanda was the cheapest at 325 per gallon
PPG was 832.00
Debeer was 713.00
Valspar was 330.00

He decided to do the PPG. I did not know I had two options in town for mixing PPG and my brother ended up knowing the guy mixing the paint. He said he gave us "body shop" prices (not sure if we did or not) but they promised the PPG would have better coverage than the others.

Thanks for all your input. Hopefully get some color on in the next week or two :)

PPG is very proud of their stuff and as they kept raising their prices I started looking else where. That's how I found SPI in the first place. The PPG DP_LF primer I was using was very expensive and only mixed 2:1. Tried SPI one time and never looked back.

I was told I was getting SHOP pricing but when I called the same business in another town location, he gave me the same price without knowing me from a hole in the wall.

i have yet to spray a color in wanda that did not cover in 3 coats unless its some kind of crazy custom color i mix. oem colors 2-3 coats no problem even with something like bright red. the ppg wont cover any better.

shine, i havent bought hok in prob 6-7 years. i quit using that stuff. not that its bad but it always covered terrible. i can mix all their colors off the diamont rack when i had it and now the wanda rack and it covers in 1/2 the coats.

was wondering if you still used it. i have a friend who has been really frustrated with it for a while . i guess valspar decided to cut back on it too. i have not used it in several years. limited on what i can get here. 70 miles to any real jobber except napa or carquest and their prices are crazy . glad o dont do much any more .

PPG is user-friendly, but one thing I know for sure from experience out here in stone-chip country, you definitely want to activate DBC or it will dry into one of the most chip-prone coatings I have seen from a major.

Is one brand easier to shoot metallic colors for beginners? I am going to be painting a 69 Mustang in Indian Fire Red. I am willing to spend extra on base if it can help with tiger strips due to less than optimal spray pattern.

For full resprays I currently use the PPG Omni Plus MBPX. Compared to the old Omni, it has new toners, better matches, and pearls like the major solvent borne paints. I use it because I am in a low VOC area, and it's the only solvent borne basecoat I can get from PPG. Covers pretty good, and prices are very good. Colors that don't cover much are certain blues and greens. I always try to use the best undercoat color possible before basecoat, saves me trouble.

I also put 1 ounce of hardener for every 32 ounces of ready to spray base.

Sprays very good with the SPI reducer, I don't use their Omni reducer.
