What is everyone using for grinding discs/flap wheels?

I've looked thru Rusty's 65 Mustang thread a few times and it completely amazing me what they can do!! So it got me thinking all of my problems must be that I'm using the wrong grinding discs, so what are you guys using to grind the welds? I've been using cheap flap wheels on a 4 1/2" grinder or 2" or 3" 36/80 grit discs on my little air grinder. Is with worth of to buy 3M or another brand or just the flee market stuff?

I've also read where Rusty or Brian cuts down the 3" discs to 2", how are you doing that - are you using scissors or tin snips or did you grind cup saw into a die to stamp them out?

And I am kidding, I know there's years of experience and talent in Brian & Rusty but the right equipment wouldn't hurt!!

Thanks, Steve

In the last pic how do you grind an inside 90 like that? What type of disc would work the best? I would have it all gouged up and I know it's practice and skill but any pointers?

Thanks, Steve

I don't know how he can get them to look so good I can't. Brian starts out with a 50 grit 3" disc and than cuts it down to 2" or smaller since he has one pad that has worn down a lot. We do use 3m discs but others should work.

Thanks for the reply.

It seems like in one of your thread you mentioned a 3M 3" conditioning wheel, are you still using them also?

How are you cutting the discs down? It seems like scissors are tin snips would dull quickly.

Thanks again, Steve

I was curious what I thought you said so I went looking found it on page 11 of 1965 Mustang rust repair:

When the 3" grinding disc or scotchbrite disc ware down he cuts them down to to fit a 2" pad.

Are you still using these or just the 50 grit grinding disc?
