What color masking tape has the least adhesion

As the thread title states, what color masking tape has the least amount of adhesion?

Last time I masked my front and rear window rubber gaskets, I used Yellow 3M masking tape. It held great but, I left it on for three days and when I removed it, it left a ton of the masking tape glue on the rubber. It was a real pain in the butt to remove.

Was it outside? I have never had that happen with 3M yellow unless it was exposed to weather or solvents.
Green is supposedly less susceptible to this kind of problem though.

Interesting, the car was in the garage and I guess the late afternoon sun would have been on the back window. There was much less adhesive on the front window gasket when removed, and much easier to remove the glue.

I have some green 3M tape, I'll try that. Need to mask the car up for some media blasting, door jambs and cowel that extends into the engine bay.

Thanks for your reply.

All I've used in the last 20 years is the refinish 3M yellow and green. They are roughly the same.
It's not so much a matter of best or least adhesion. It's about how well the tape releases adhesion. Like Crash I've never experienced your issue with either the yellow or green. Not once if the tape is fresh. Older tape yes.. So that's why I asked how old the tape was. When it gets old (over 1 year) it can do that. Age or exposure to UV light. Like if it was left in the Sun . If you are specifically searching for a low adhesion tape for a particular reason I'm not aware of any.

I use duct tape when I’m masking for media blasting… :D

I’ve also never had a problem with 3M yellow tape.

Reading the OP again makes me think there may be something about the rubber that is reacting with the adhesive. What you can do is simply put a bit of tape facing the other way on the tape right where the adhesive would have touched the rubber, that way the rubber is touching the non-adhesive side of the tape. I don't know if I'm explaining that well.

I didn't think about the rubber reacting with the adhesive, you may be onto something. I checked the data code on the yellow tape and it's stamped, 6/16/21, and was used around Sept. 21.

I also understand what you explained. I have green tape on the rubber gasket so I'll see how it reacts.

The last thing to do is bag the car tomorrow before media blasting the lower part of cowel.

3M makes a low tack pressure sensitive tape for masking things like wall paper, lavender in color. I picked it up from Lowes. Made so it won’t pull wall paper off the wall when tape is removed

Thank you,

I'm almost at the point of pulling the front and rear windows. I left them in to keep sanding dust out of the car, and it was much easier masking the glass when spraying the main body with epoxy.

Some may think my methods are ass backwards but, there is a plan to my madness.

Thanks for the reply.

yes 3m has their purple delicate surface tape. its 3m's washi tape. if you have never used washi tape, its basically low tack masking tape on rice paper instead of crepe paper. its ultra thin. 3m has the same thing in their automotive line and its an aqua green color called performance masking tape but because it says automotive they charge you 3 times as much. this tape will always pull off clean and you can use it with solvent based paints. i use it here in my shop by the case load every day. fantastic stuff.
