Wax and grease remover slower than 710?

Hello,
I am using 710 to sight panels after blocking. But it is too fast. Or I am too slow. I used to use PPG's DX330 for this purpose but that seems to be discontinued. What do you guys use to sight panels?
Thanks for your help,
Peter

Early on when I started using SPI products I mentioned in a post the same thing you said. How I preferred DX330 because it was slower. At the time the SPI 710 was a faster product than it is now. Barry changed the formula and sent me a gallon to test. For wiping down I think it's fine. For something like you are doing it's a touch fast. I don't know how you are applying it to be able to sight the panel. I would guess you are using it like 330, on a wipe then wipe the panel. Either soak your wipe really good or try spraying it on with a hand sprayer and then sight the panel. And hustle. :)The hand sprayer will allow you plenty of time. You will probably have to wait a touch to let it even out though. I don't do it much so when I do what I described is what I do.

As for alternatives I know Axalta/Dupont did have something that was the equivalent to DX330. Whether it is still available IDK. Been so long since I used it I can't remember the part number either. Sorry. All the cheap W&G removers are going to have a lot of acetone and even alcohol in them so none of them are suitable because they will be really fast.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the response. I ordered a Sureshot to put it in so that I can get it wetter and hopefully that will give me a little bit more time. I did exactly as your doing and soaked a fairly thick wipe and applied it. Still too fast. Or I am too slow.
FWIW, I did some surfing and found that DX330 has been replaced with SX330. No idea if it is any good. If all else fails I will also try that.
Thannks agaoin for your help,
Peter

Another thing to try would be to combine mineral spirits with the 710. Obviously you would test something first to make sure nothing untoward happens, and I'm not 100% on whether mineral spirits would leave a film of sorts. Looking at the MSDS of DX330 it does contain naptha which is one of the main components of mineral spirits. In fact DX330 according to the MSDS was 70-80% Naptha. So possibly just getting a quart or gallon of Naptha and custom mixing some with 710 would be ideal. You would have to test but it's worth a shot if wetting the panel down is a technique you rely on.

And it goes without saying that your custom mix should only be used for wetting the panel. Regular W&G remover for cleaning prior to paint.

I recently used SPI 710 from a pump sprayer. Don't be shy applying the 710, you want it to flow out as already mentioned above. You'll have plenty of time to sight the panel looking for straightness and defects.

100% mineral spirits is the way to go. its super slow and no need to mix it into anything else. for years i have used the kleenstrip brand from home depot. in 20 years it has never left a film or anything behind to cause issues. i would always need it to wipe down delicate airbrushing where 710 would remove some of it. mineral spirits is super mild and will not do this. DO NOT buy what is labeled as paint thinner which many times has mineral spirits listed on the front of it. paint thinner is not pure mineral spirits. its a blend like lacquer thinner where you never know whats in it. you want actual mineral spirits and i would stick with kleenstrip. i trust that stuff only because i have been using it for so long.

Quite a long time ago I used to use Dupont Prepsol it was IIRC mineral spirits and very slow to evaporate. I also used Pre-cleano, wasn't Dupont , don't remember who's product that was from but it was naphtha and evaporated fast.
100% mineral spirits is very slow to evaporate.

Jim beat me with the mineral spirits. Add to what he said make sure it's 100% mineral spirits. Don't let the hardware store BS you into buying "painters solvent" as a replacement for mineral spirits or naphtha, complete garbage containing acetone and who knows what. I started a thread here recently about that.

Excellent suggestions guys. Thanks for the input. I bought the Sureshot and some SX330. The SX330 is considerable slower than the 710-1 and is what I am after for speed. In the future I will use Mineral spirits with the caveat that it is 100% Mineral Spirits.
