Waterborne concern

I am at the masking stage for my project...just got in my SPI red base and Universal clear today and anxious to try it. I got a gallon of the 700 cleaner last week and after using my DA with 80 grit to prepare for the epoxy, I decied to try the cleaner to see how it would do. It seemed to clean wonderfully, but within 24 hours I saw rust star everywhere I had wiped! This car has sit for months in my garage with absolutely no visible rust on a stripped surface. Now a few days later, the rust is so bad it produces brown dust when I sand it. I am just days from spraying and this concerns me...will I have to DA the whole car again? Have I screwed up by using this and not putting epoxy over it almost immediately? Has anybody had this issue? i hope it is as simple as sanding and cleaning it again right before the black epoxy...I hate to think of rust under all the work and $$ I will have invested.

Don't wipe the vehicle down until you are ready to spray. There is something about the waterborne that seems to clean every pore of the metal, while this is great for adhesion it also leaves the metal surface more reactive to atmospheric oxygen. We seldom leave metal bare for more than 48 hours or so, it's just asking for contamination and corrosion issues.

Without being there to inspect the surface, I would have to say a quick sanding would be your safest option.

Welcome to the forum, btw!

Hit it with a maroon scotchbrite then clean it again, then get some epoxy on it.

yup clean it when you are ready to epoxy. to add to what crash said, you have to remember also that the 700 has lots of water in it.

clean metal will rust faster . the orange surface rust tells you it is clean. no point in cleaning one before your ready shoot. like bob said just scuff and go.

Thanks for the replies...I guess I saw that rust pop up and over reacted. I run over it with a maroon pad, then wiped it with a dry towel to get the dust off. Today I went over it three times with the 700, getting less on the wipe cloth each time. I then put down two coats of black epoxy. It look pretty good for my first whole body spray job. The biggest problem was getting all the disassembled parts and pieces in my poor boy garage paint booth!
