Since this is my first time painting a car (85 Trans am), I was advised to stick with a solid color. The problem is that I can't find a good color choice. I want a navy blue or grey, but without a metallic base, it lacks some personality. Is there a soild color in dark grey or navy blue that wouldn't look cheap? Or should I go with a metallic color? How much harder are the metallics to spray?

True! But I want something a little different. I found a non-metallic battleship gray on a Porsche that I like. Choices, choices. If I felt confident in spraying a metallic, this wouldn't be so difficult.

Just go for a mettallic. How do you know its that difficult? You've never done it! Now's the best time to learn. You obviously have ambition if you are even contemplating painting the car yourself. There is enough support here to guide you through the process. Pick a color, and grab some junk fenders and practice. You'll be much happier. Just my $0.02.

I agree. If you buy a decent paint, use a good spray gun, and learn how to dial the spray pattern in, you will have no problem getting the metallic paint down with just a little practice.

Go to your local jobber and buy some of their "mismatched metallic paint" (stuff the customers rejected). Get you an old fender or hood and practice.

Well I picked out a color that I really like. It's Chrysler charcoal metallic. I sprayed the underside of the rear hatch and the inside of both doors (they're off the car). I then used Universal clear. Everything looks great. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
