Tacoma bed cap color change

I'm doing a color change on a Toyota Tacoma bed cap. Current paint is in good shape and will be going from a medium Grey color to a toyota grey/silver 2010 color. I don't have the code right this minute. My question is 1. Can I sand with 400 and just do a seal coat with SPI epoxy for adhesion and go base from there? 2. I'd appreciate advice on how much base to cover...my gut tells me a pint but I can't run out in the middle either. I will be using either shopline plus or DBC.

Sure you can, that's the way I'd do it.
A pint may not be enough, I'd suspect a little more.
Can you spray it and if you haven't enough just go
back and get more? I'd probably get a pint and a half,

Do you have any silver left over from an earlier paint job? If it's the same brand, I would spray 1 coat of the old silver first, then a pint should be enough.

Those choices amount to crappy base or expensive base. Shopline Plus is just Omni+ which is low end garbage. DBC is hideously overpriced. You could get Motobase from Chad here on the forum for what the Shopline costs. Less when you factor in the fact that Omni+ takes 4 coats or more to get coverage on a color like that. Motobase is as good and I think better than DBC. Coverage is really good as well. Something to consider.

If it's Shopline/Omni a pint won't be enough. Stuff doesn't cover well at all. I've had to use enough of it over the years. Size of that shell I would bet on 24 ounces minimum (unreduced) to shoot 4 coats, which is what it will take to get coverage.

Thanks for the replies. The other option I have semi-close is metalux. They are still a couple hours away from me but they are also where I go for Southern Polyurethane s if I need it that day. Any experience with metalux base?

And if I do go with motobase or metalux do I need more than a pint? Not sure if you can order anything between a pint and a quart.

It's a very nice base. Would work well.

I'm probably not the best one to give you a guesstimate as I always estimate too much. Metalux mixes 2:1 so I would want at least 24 ounces. That would give you a bit over a quart of sprayable material. You would be able to get the jobber to mix a specific amount. Having them mix 24 oz would not be a problem.

If you don't want to drive 2 hours, you could always order Motobase from forum member Chad and have it shipped to you. Don't know your time frame so I don't know if you want to wait a few days. Motobase is really awesome stuff for the money. Coverage is very good, some colors the coverage is outstanding. It mixes 1:1. Chad could mix any amount you need. He could probably get you very close in the amount as well. Like I said I always mix or order too much. :)

I'm assuming the epoxy you have is grey? If not you should seal it in grey to minimize the amount of coats needed. SPI gray would be spot on for your color.

Yes it would be grey. As soon as you I get a chance to get the code I will get in touch with Chad. I definitely would rather not drive 2 hours if I can help it. Thanks for the help.
