Super basic DIY air setup

I looked at it tonight, motor was indeed 1hp, it appears to be a replacement. Surprisingly, the rest of the unit was in remarkable shape for being built in 1956! I'm a sucker for old tools. I would likely find a larger electric motor, hopefully something in the 3-5 hp range. I don't have any complete's to do so doing a few panels at a time will work in the near term Plus, I got it for less than $200 so I figured why not. I need to learn about the motor speed relationship to the flywheel. The existing motor has a pulley with 3 sections, largest diameter (which it's currently on, medium, and smallest).

putting a larger motor on it will not change it. spinning it faster will damage it and blow oil. most likely a 3 hp pump so that is all you will ever get from it. i would suggest you spend some money on good filters since it is a given this thing pumps oil .

I would check the current speed it is running at....you dont want to overspeed as shine said. If you dont have a tach you can calculate it. Flywheel diameter/motor pulley diameter gives the ratio between the two. Motor nameplate RPM/ratio gives how fast the compressor is spinning (minus any belt slip) :D

I would wonder if the plate on compressor/tank would reflect what original motor had. I'm 99% certain this motor is replacement. Most type 30's that ingersoll still makes use anywhere from 3-5 HP Although I know newer motors aren't rated like older ones. I figured that if these type 30's have been around for 50+ years, it can't be that bad. Definitely will invest in good filtration and have to hard plum some lines in. Lots to do before I can even dig into the first project.

Here's an update of this thing. I'm guessing it's going to need work to get the max use out of it. It's super quiet, but Shine is correct in that I'm sure in it's current config, it's not going to sustain a complete spray job. I'd still like to see what I can do with it as the love of a good quality vintage machine has an appeal all it's own.

I just recently got a 1956 Ingersoll Rand Type 30 Model V232 C1 compressor. There is no info I can find on the 232. I've called numerous Ingersoll Rand Tech lines etc...There's the 231 and 234 but not 232...

Here's a few images of the beast and a video of it running.

I"m trying to learn what I could expect out of this in terms of scfm.

The Stroke is likely 2 inches, High pressure cylinder is 1 3/4", Low pressure is 3" cylinder.

I'd like to run a HVLP spray gun but not sure if it's got the umph to keep it going. Also, from totally empty tank to fill, it's nearly an hour.

Currently there's a 1 horse single phase motor on it. I'd like to get the highest SCFM out of it as possible and am not afraid to tear into it to get it running better. Perhaps there is someone here that knows more about these old beasts.

Thanks!
