Suggestions for primer

New hobbyists member here, been a PPG Shop Line user for the last few years, mainly because we have a local dealer in our small town who gives me a trade discount and he carries stock. I really have no complaints with Shop Line, though I know it's considered low-end $#@% by many, but I read good things about SPI and the pricing is attractive. I like having my local dealer with stock when I run low on something in the middle of a job, but the price difference is hard to ignore.

I'm thinking to try SPI for my current project and was wondering what primer might be comparable to PPG JP202, which can be used as a high-build primer or reduced for use as a surfacer. Ideally, also available in different colors. I paint with BC/CC now mostly, but some acrylic enamel occasionally for solid colors, under hood stuff, etc.

Also, does SPI have dealers or direct sales only?

Thanks!

SPI Has many dealers around the country (I'm one) You can contact SPI to purchase, and they will have you go through your local dealer if there is one. Otherwise they will ship out of Georgia, 2-3 day delivery normally. 2K Regular build will work perfect for your needs. Comes in gray and black. If you have never tried the epoxy primer, I would recommend getting a quart kit. You will find it will become your favorite, as long as your project has time for the extra cure time needed. Comes in white, gray, black, red oxide.

You might ask you PPG dealer if they can get it. They will say no, but I became a dealer after several of my Wisconsin customers asked me to carry it. I was having problems getting consistent brands from my national warehouse, they kept changing what they carried ever few years and I would get stuck with products that I could not get the associated products needed to sell the line. Your local dealer might be in a similar situation, and take on the SPI product.

I was under the impression that majors would threaten to punish jobbers that carried smaller brands, it's nice to know this isn't always true.

I'm sure if it's a large full line PPG jobber, PPG won't allow it, I am a small distributor that was only able to justify carrying some private label clears and primers like, 5 Star, Advantage, Maverick, Hi Tech, Ect. I was able to get some Chinese imported lines like Showell, but since most of the body panels, bumpers and lights I get are imported, I was really wanting to get away from having everything imported. I have found a few aftermarket bumper manufacturers that have started back up in Michigan, so I get what I can from them also.
