spray on masking

Have any of you used the spray on masking made by 3M and others? Was wondering if it would do better underhood on the firewall/inner fenders/radiator support and frame rails than trying to tape and paper/plastic everything. Even after hours of masking, always seem to get a dusting of overspray in there.
 
I don't know a whole lot about it, but I have a few shops that use the AFC brand spray mask, they say it does much better than the 3m.

They spray the car with it, getting about 1 foot away from the panels to be painted, then put one layer of paper down. So basically all they are saving is the plastic, I'm unsure of it, but I think it has it's place..

As far as frames and wheel wells and stuff like that, i'm unsure. Probably would have to talk to someone that uses it..
I could give you a number, if you want to ask about it.
 
Thanks, Chad. I would like to talk to someone about it, pros and cons. I'm not looking for savings, just better coverage from overspray on difficult to mask parts. Whats the number, please?
 
Ill get his shop number monday,, all i have is his cell number with me, but he's been using quite a bit so he would know some pro's and cons.
 
I don't remember where I recently read a thread about spray mask, if my senility isn't getting the best of me I remember BarryK was participating in the discussion

Thanks, SOF. I'm glad your memory served you well. That is a good discussion on the subject and even Barry had some positive input. I'm thinking I may give it a try (using Barry's method) in the engine compartment. Now I need to find out what is available and which one is preferred. Hoping Chads guy (or someone on here) can recommend a brand.
 
I have been using it for years at work. I think the brand we use is USG or something like that. It does a good job in a collision setting. We have a few guys that have problems with overspray, but they don't apply it right, as in poor coverage. Those are the same guys that spray primer until it runs onto the floor. Just don't apply it where you cannot run water on it to clean it off.

I used to use 3m and it works good. Coverage is the key. One light coat and the primer used to still penetrate it. The primer could be scrubbed off it was cleaned hard enough. Spray two coats and it just worked a lot better. For wheel wells and frames it's great. I thought it worked good on the body for jobs that you know were getting detailed later. Sometimes you don't want to wash the entire car after a job if it didn't need it so I used plastic on those.
